SUNDAY. MARCH 13. 1960 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PARE FIVE DO-IT-YOURSELF Work Center And Desk Easily Installed Now By J. RALPH DALZELL Modern housewives need a work center and desk where they can plan meals, project purchases of groceries and other supplies, keep their household and budget ac counts, file recipes, have cook books handy and, in general, be able to run their houses to better advantage. The desk can also be used as a study center by children and as a place to write letters. When new houses are being planned and built, or when kitch ens are being completely remod eled, it is an easy matter to plan space for a work center desk and related shelves or cabinets. In ex isting houses or apartments, where remodeling is not being planned, an ordinary closet space can be converted into an efficient work center and desk. When this is done, another closet can be built anywhere in the house or apartment using plywood and easy-to-follow plans. The picture shows a work cen ter and desk in what originally was a closet which had a door three feet wide. The closet is three feet nine inches deep and of the same width. Larger or even some what smaller closets may be used 18 to 24 inches deep, from front to back. The length of the desk, end to end as it is faced, is de termined by the width of the clos et space. The end of the desk. above the stool opening, may be fastened to the wall with a brack et or cleat. Accordion type folding doors (see picture) may be purchasd at hardware stores or buildin material dealers. These doors are easy to install. They are attached to the door jambs and run along a track attached to the top of the door opening. Directions for in stalling come with the doors. When the work center is in use, the doors are folded (stacked) against the door jambs (sides). They can be pulled shut, to hide the work center, when so desired. They are available in several colors and in cloth, metal and wood. Tell the dealer the sue of the door opening and he will select the proper size folding doors. All of the work center woodwork may be painted or given a natur al finish. Good enamel, in any color, makes a pleasing finish that is easy to keep clean. Or, use any of the clear finishes to preserve FOLDING ACCORDION . First, remove the old door. If it is a flush door, cut it down in size and, by the addition of iron legs and some refinishing. make a desirable coffee table for your living room. Remove the old hinges from the door jamb. Three or more shelves (see pic ture) spaced about 12 inches apart may be made using pine, birch or Douglas fir wood boards that are about 12 inches wide and at least three-fourths of an inch thick. The ends of the shelves may be sup ported by metal brackets or by one by one inch wood cleats which may be fastened to the walls using star type wall' grips, all as shown in picture A. 'The grips expand, as shown, after being pushed through drilled holes and turned with a screwdriver. The distance between the surface of the desk and the first shelf should be at least 18 inches. All shelves should fit against the rear wall of the closet. Wood desks, having five or six drawers (see picture), may be pur chased from furniture stores where unfinished furniture is for sale. Depending on the depth of the closet, the desk can be from the grain and pleasing appearance of the wood. The walls can be painted to contrast with or match the woodwork. The floor can be covered with colorful tile. Any kind of a kitchen stool can be used as a desk chair. When not in use, the stool may be placed in the opening under the desk. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q. Where can we obtain plans and directions for building small storage cabinets of the kind that could be used in bedrooms? A. The Douglas Fir Plywood As socialion, Tacoma 2, Washington will send free plans and directions if you will address a post card to il)cm and ask for closet or storage plans. Q. Some time ago you men lioned patching old linoleum on floors. Would that process, using a mixture of finely ground cork andQwhite shellac, be economical in cases where the linoleum is badly worn in several places? A. No, the patching process is worthwhile only in cases where small areas are involved. Large areas would not have a nice ap pearance. Would be best to buy new linoleum. California Deer Situation Still All Messed Up; Group May Meet To Talk Problems SACRAMENTO (UPD-Califor- nia's citizens committee on deer hunting, appointed early in Feb ruary by Chairman Pauline L. Da vis of the Assembly Fish and Game Committee, may meet dur ing March. If it does, the 20-member com mittee will begin a study of meth ods which could be used to con trol the stale's deer herd and at the same time conserve it. Ben Glading, wildlife manager for the State Fish and Game De partment, who wasn't included on the committee, probably could give some suggestions. He told DPI that right now doc hunts are held across the nation with the exception of some south ern states, where there is a real shortage of deer. From the no doe hunt stales, it ranges up to states like Idaho and .Maine where a hunter can use! his license for either a buck or a doc. Then, there's the permit method used in some states. The stale de cides on a certain area fur a doe hunt it may be the entire state and then issues the number of permits necessary to harvest 'he crop. Sometimes the permits are han dled on a first come-first served basis. The distribution point is the county seat or the slate capital and in some cases this system is handled by mail. When the right number of permits are sold, that's ii. Then there is the lottery sys tem, where the permits are hand ed out in a drawing. This system on doe hunts is allowed in Cali fornia by the Busch Bill. It also is possible in some states to pair applications for a party shoot. A system used in California dur ing MM and in the 1959 Los An geles Archery shoot involves letting a hunter take either a doe or a buck on one of his tags. But before all this is done, there is one necessity a count of the deer. And that is not easy. Glading said there are a num ber of systems now being used but none of them are absolutely accurate down to the last buck, doe or fawn. For so-called "absolute" counts, there are two major methods used now aerial counts and track counts. The limitations of an aerial count are obvious. Ail planes can't see deer in dense undercover or trees only in open meadows and the like. The drawbacks of track counts are also obvious. Glading said thai there is only one major area in California, a road along the bor der of Oregon and California, where this type of count is used extensively now. Then there's the "Lincoln In dex" count, primarily used for ducks but applicable to deer, too To explain this system, Glading used the example of a bottle of beans. You know how many black beans you have and you put them in a bottle with white beans, then shake up the whole bottle. Then you take out a handful of both black and white beans and count them. From that, since you know the ratio of white beans to black. you can estimate how many beans theft; ace in the whole bottle. In deer counts, you mark a known number of deer and they repre sent the black beans. Also, there in the "Kelker In dex" way of counting deer. To use this, you find out the ratio between male and female deer be fore the season and keep track of the male kill. Then you make a sex ratio count after the season and come up with the total. - There are two other, more posi tive, methods but they can be used only on a limited basis. They are the effect on forage and the pellet count. All of this indicates that game management is far from a posi tive job. And it shows the major problems that will confront the 20 citizens when they begin their stu dy of deer hunting. CONVERTED TO COl.F GUOSSINGliH. N.Y.
