Wedding Bells, Babies Boom Economy
By HAY CROMI.EY
NEA Stall Corrrspondcnt
WASHINGTON NE A I-Worried
about the next decade? Relax.
The nation's statisticians and
economists have taken out their
charts, looked at their nialhem.it
ical formulas, consulted with the
Census Bureau, and come up with
this cheering news:
So many young couples will he
getting married and having ha
bies in the MWO's that the nation's
factories, stoics, beauty parlors
and filling stations, auto, home,
vacuum cleaner and loy salesmen
doctors, lawyers and almost ev
eryone else will be busy just keep
ing up with the business.
Some 4.000 assorted economists
and statisticians met here recent
ly to try out some o( their ideas
and predictions on each other.
These are not the views of all
4.000. Frankly no two men seen
agree precisely on anything. Rath
er this is sort of consensus of
representative economists, reached
NOW
by men who have been studying
what's ahead.
Specifically by 1070:
The U.S. will have a population
of between 203 million and 220
million.
Employment will be up around
111 million to 02 million. Unenv
ployment will be about 3.400.000
The average work week will be
only 37 hours.
The Cross National Product
the total production of goods and
services will be up about 50 per
cent to $7:3 billion.
New homes will be built at an
average rate of one and a third
million a year all during the
I'MiO's, compared with only a mi:
lion predicted for lo.
Or in dollars, new homes wi
l,e built at the rate of almost $2.i
billion a year, compared with SIB
billion expected for l!ii0. The av
crage home will be a little big
gcr. and more expensive.
There'll sti'l he recessions in
the 60 s around every four years
or so. But they'll he mild, more
i mm i
every year. The average will hit
dote to I. .100.000 a year in the
first half of. the 'fifl's and around
1,500,000 a year between 1065 and
1070.
There will be a growing short
age of industrial managers. White
collar workers will gradually
greatly outnumber blue collar
men.
The trend will be for fewer peo
ple to be thrown out of work dur
ing recessions.
Farm income will continue to
move downward. The migration
from the farms to the cities will
continue. The rate of migration
will increase in the Ws.
There will he a major shift of
workers out of manufacturing and
mining into the services and professions.
Foreign competition will contin
ue to grow as some key compet-
ng countries continue to modern
ze their factories at a faster rate
than American companies.
New products will be developed
during the '60 s at an even faster
rale than in the decade just past.
The reason: a whopping increase
in industrial research in the next
10 years.

Even if successive administrations

these won't slop it.
Social security will continue to

A growing surplus of unskilled

baby boom that started two dec

THE LIVING EPITAPH
Whrn I pane nut and my time Is

I hope for no lofty monument.
No splendid prorewion marching slow.
if the lost road I go.
pomp and glory I care for then.
When I depart from the world of men.
it I'd like to think when my race is

That there will he in the world a few

I am sorry to toe him pRsaing on,
For he was a sort that's fair and

The kind of one that's hard to spare.
naan't money, he hadn't fame.
But he kept the rule, end he played

His eyes were true and his laufh

He held his truth and honor dear.
And now his work is at an end,
i Know now much I shall miss my

I shall smile In peace as my eyelids

I shall rest in the quiet and lie In
