Farmer Gives Money To Kin Says He Hates Government GALLATIN, Mo, AP) "I've Group Eyes Aid Altering ' PORTLAND (AP) - A lcflisla live interim committee says it .wants to alter a bit the method of caring (or welfare patients i: .nursing homes in Multnomah County. i The committee, investigating welfare practices, recommended the state provide doctors for the nursing home patients on welfare and pay for the house calls; . The unanimous vote was made after John Misko of the Oregon Nursing Home Assn. said some nursing homes now pay for the house calls themselves. The committee also was told that a rehabilitation program is reaping dividends. Dr. Robert Heilman of the state Board of Health said that under the pilot program at a county con .valcscent hospital, 79 per cent of persons suffering ' strokes have .been brought back to the point of self care. Prior to the program, he said, only five per cent of the stroke victims were able to make that much, progress. Money Expended For Babe, Bribe Not Deductible WASHINGTON (UPI) Any money spent for "babes and bribes" at that fancy disc jock eys convention in Miami last year won't be tax deductible, In ternal Revenue Service (IRS) j officials said today. . But expenditures for the "booze" pari of the entertainment .could qualify as a legitimate busi ncss expense, they added. . The revenue service does not :permit deductions for anything which violates federal, state or local law or public policy. I never held with lawyers and wills. Decided I'd make sure it goes where I want." Knight traces his antipathy for tax collectors to his young man hood. "I was raised in a log house on a ridge about three miles west of here. First farm I bought was the old Blake place. Drove $200 worth of cattle and hogs up there to make the first payment. "Right off they wanted $45 taxes on the place and it still mort gaged. It don't hardly seem right a man has to pay taxes on a farm he don't even own. So I've hated the government ever since I was old enough to know any thing." Knight said he expects to give away the remainder of his estate next year "it I lire to get the chance." Outside Duties Given Teacher LOS ANGELES (AP) - The teacher who took a sex survey among his students has been given duties outside the classroom. Cecil M. Cook, who had his Van Nuys High School students fill out a questionnaire pertaining to their sex life, was cleared last week by the State Board of Education of any implication of immoral con duct. His informal leave from the school system started last June. School Supt. Ellis A. Jarvis said Cook's duties will be outside the classroom for the present. While on leave he has been a.drug sales- Lena Refuses To Apologize For Tossing Of Ash Trays HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Negro singer Lena Home said today she had no intention of apologizing lor throwing ash trays, dishe and a hurricane lamp at a man she claims made insulting re marks about her race. My alitor is directed against something that is wrong, not at something I have to apologize for," she said. "I really don't like to make scenes like that lit sometimes people push you too far." Miss Home opened a small cut above the left eye of engineering executive Harvey S. Vincent when one of the conch shell ash- trays she hurled hit him Monday night Hills. Vincent, 30, vice president of Consultants & Designers Inc., declined to press charges but :aid he has consulted his attor ney about suing Miss Horne. "I am sorry if he feels that way." said the lurch singer. "I could also suo him for defama tion of character." Miss Home, obviously upset about the incident, spoke about it in quiet tones. Asked what Vin cent said that touched off what was for her an unusual demon stration in public, she said- "He was anti-Negro. That's all I can say." Vincent said: "I was shocker' to note that the statements ol at the Luau restaurant in Beverly I. Miss Horne, as reflected by the newspaper accounts and the stories, impute to me the role of a heckler and a bigot. I am neither." He said he wasn't aware of Miss Home's presence in the restaurant until she was "stand ing over my table, raging and screaming profanity." "As far as I am concerned, the attack was entirely unprovoked," he said. Neither he nor Miss Horne would elaborate on the remarks ;hat started the incident. But Police Capt. P.R. Smith said investigating officers at the cenc reported: "He (Vincent) said something about not liking niggers, and she asked him to stop. But he (aid it again and that's when the ac tion started." The officers at the scene asked Vincent if he had said that, Smith reported, and Vincent replied: "Well, she is a nigger." Jack Pru itt, secretary, called the roll. Eight members were present. Our lead ers. Earl Fishburn and Harry Mc Coy, explained to members what they would be doing at our next meetings. At our next meeting we will be making our plant presses. Jackie O'Neil led the group in songs. Then the meeting was adjourned.
