Lieutenant Lewis expects State Seeks To Convict 's Hand BOSTON (AP) The stale to day pressed for the conviction of a Dutch ship radio operator ac cused of killing a pretty Chicago cfivorcee, but it admitted it does not know what weapon, if any, was used. As the trial of handsome Wil lem Van Rie, 31, nearcd the end of the first day Wednesday, his attorneys requested that the pros ccution describe the manner of the alleged crime and the weap on. The state replied: "The com monwealth is unable to specify at this time whether any weapon or other instrument was used in the commission of the crime." The state contends Van Rie beat pretty Lynn Kauffman, 23, and dumped her body overboard to climax a shipboard romance dur ing a slow boat trip from the Orient. . Miss Kauffman s body was found on the rocky shore of a drab Boston harbor island in mid-September, the day after the SS Vi lccht sailed from Boston to New York on its 44-day voyage from Singapore. : In another specification, the state said Miss Kauffman's body was seen floating in the water be fore it was recovered from the island's shore. The state did not disclose who kpw the body afloat or whether that person would be called as a witness. The state chartered a private boat today to take the 12-man jury and its two alternates on a tour of Boston harbor to point out the rath of the Utrecht and the spot where the divorcee's body was found. Van Rie shows no outward signs cf nervousness as he sits in the prisoner's dock. Once Wednesday he turned to his wife of two years and winked confidently. She came here from their home in Utrecht, Holland, to stand by him. She oc cupies a spectator's seat 15 feet from him. Miss Kauffman was aboard the SS Utrecht with Mrs. Stanley Spector and the three Spector chil dren. She was employed as a re search aide to Dr. Spector, pro fessor of oriental studies at Wash ington University, St. Louis. to be discharged from the Air Force in March. Sylvester Mcggs, a Klamath Falls electrician, fell off a rool while working Tuesday afternoon and broke a bone in his heel. He was admitted to Klamath Valley Hospital. Mrs. William M. Barnett, presi dent of the local chapter, NAACP, will have a spot at the end of a special Lincoln Day broadcast over radio station KFLW between 4:15 and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb ruary 13. Mrs. Richard L. Serving will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Midland Grange will hold a public card party Saturday, February 13 at 8 p.m. in the Midland Grange Hall.
