HERALD AN'D NEWS, Klamath Falls. Ore. Thursday, Ffh. 11, 10 PAGE 1 B Budget Fight May Begin In Capitol SHINGTON (AP)-A House- passed 900-million-dollar anti-pol-1 lution bill may formally touch off the 1960 battle of the budget be twecn President Eisenhower and the Democratic-controlled Con gress. Passed Tuesday by the House, the Senate-House compromise far exceeds the President's proposals, It may be the first big bill to draw a veto this year. Senate action may not come uiv til next week or later, but ap proval by that body is almost certain since the Senate previous. ly had passed a measure almost as expensive. The House acted by voice vote, without audible dissent. Republi cans didn't oppose the bill, al though they said they didn't ap prove it. Their attitude apparently was that the sooner it reached the White House the sooner it could be vetoed. Rep. John Taber of New York, senior Republican on the Appro priations Committee, predicted the bill would be vetoed. A compromise of separate measures passed last year by the Senate and the House, the bill would raise to 900 million dollars the present ceiling of 500 million on federal grants for construction of local sewage disposal plants. The grants would be spread over a 10-year period. The compromise total is 100 mil lion more than the Senate ap proved last year and 100 million less than the House originally voted. The government's share of the - cost of any project would be limited to $450,000, or 30 per cent of the overall cost, whichever is lower. The bill is an authorization on ly. It docs not provide the actual money to finance the program. President Eisenhower set a 20-million-dollar annual appropria tion figure in his 1960 budget mes sage. His view was that local gov ernments should pay more of the program costs. 4-H NEWS THE CAKE MISSES The third meeting of the Cake Misses was held at the home of Mrs. L. E. Rodgers.
