LDS Church Slates Work BURNEY The Burney Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ ol Latter Day Saints will begin con struction next spring of a cha pel at an approximate cost of $40,000. The site is located in the north western part of town and has been dedicated by Albert B. Peterson, president of the Shasta District ol the LDS Church. The proposed structure will serve as a chapel and recreation room until other units arc added, when it will be converted into class rooms. The Burney Branch will contribute 30 per cent of the cost, including donated labor by mem bers, and the parent body will pay the remainder. The branch, organized in Octob er, 1955, serves a membership of 60 residents in Burney, Montgom ery Creek, McArthur and Fall Riv er Mills. The brick veneered structure will contain a kitchen and utility rooms. Charles W. Wells is president ol the Burney Branch. THOUGHTS FOR MEDITATION "Christianity," someone once said, "is not something you do to people but something you do for them." The author of the above state ment had a keener insight into the true meaning of Christianity than many of us realize at first thought. It seems a common ten dency today to think in terms of what we can do to people, re ligiously speaking. This is not the attitude of Christ, nor did God send His son into the world that he might do something to mankind, but that he might do do something for it. Christ's life is an example of a desire to do things for the people of the world. He caused the blind to have sight, the lame to walk, and the diseased to be healed. His coming to earth and his death on the cross are true examples of the spirit of a person whose sole in terest was in doing something for us; of a person who had the greatest possession known to any being, and yet wanted only to share it with others. Through a sacrifice of himself hp made eternal lite available to all who seek it. If we could enter into the true spirit of Christianity to the extent that the world could see somewhat of this spirit of Christ in our lives, we have ac complished something. If we could make them see that Christ and every true Christian since then had only the sincere desire to do something for them, then we have accomplished much. The Pilgrim Fellowship includes eighth grade and high school young people of the church and com munity who meet each Sunday evening for a two-hour period of planning, worship, discussion and recreation. Servicemen's Sunday January 31 is the day which the Free Methodist Church has set aside to honor young men and women of the church, who are serving in the armed forces. The Rev, C. 0. Tremain, pas tor of the church at 1918 Oregon Avenue, extends an invitation to attend the 11 a.m. service in tri bute to men and women in the service. The local church will distribute blanks for those present to send names and addresses of service personnel to whom they would like to have the ministries of this de partment of the church extended. The Free Methodist Church has an active roster of 2,308 service men and women and has, during the past year, sent out 17,745 pieces of literature through the Servicemen's Department of which Rev. C. First Baptist "Down Memory Lane" is the theme for the all-church banquet for the First Baptist Friday night, February 5, 6:30 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 601 Pine. Lloyd Samson, Training Union director, is general chairman of the banquet. Mrs. Norman McKee han is program chairman, and Clyde Dixon is in charge of tick et sales. The tickets are 75 cents for chil dren under 12 years and $1.50 for all over 12. Public Address A public address, "What's This World Coming To?" will be given at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 31, in Kingdom Hall, 833 North Ninth, meeting place of Jehovah Wit nesses. The speaker will be Lewis Casey, local minister. A weekly Watchtower study will follow at 4:15 p.m. Subject of this study will be "The Pursuit of Peace."
