HERALD AND NEWS. Klamath Kal Ore. Wr-dnr-sdav. Jan. 27. miif) PACK 1 B . NFL Names Ram GM Sixth Commissioner MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Pele Rozelle, 33-year-old general manager of the Los Angeles Rams is the sixth commissioner of the National Football League. Rozelle's selection as a com promise candidate to succeed the late Bert Bell came unexpectedly Tuesday night and cleared the decks for debate today on league expansion. The youthful native of South Gate, Calif, was elected to the $jO,000-a-year job by club owners who had fought bitterly for seven days through 23 ballots. Rozelle, announcing he would ket'p league headquarters in Phil adelphia and eventually move to New York City, was given three-year contracf. He .said he planned to keep the league staff in tact, including Austin H. Gunsel, acting commissioner since Bell's death Oct. 11. Minutes after Rozelle's elec tion, the owners re-elected Gunsel league treasurer, giving him a $5,000-a-year salary boost to a re ported $15.0(10 and a $10,000 bonus tor his work as acting commis sioner. Rozelle's first problem as com missioner concerned the import ant issue of expansion which will be taken up today. "Expansion is a must for the National Football League," said the new commissioner. "The growth of the league under Bert Bell has made professional football the top spectator sport in our country. There are many pop ulation areas that should have pro football." Rozelle was chosen' as commis sioner when the 12 owners were unable to agree on Marshall Lea hy of San Francisco, Gunsel, and Don Kellett, Baltimore's general manager. POET WAYNE SCOTT. NEW YORK (AP' The lalcst asking price of $262,500 for a Con tinental League group to buy out the Houston Buffs of the Ameri can Assn. was branded today as "still too much" by the new league's founder, Bill Shea. Inlormed that directors of the Buffs had cut their original de mand of $4112.500 nearly in halt, Shea commented: "At least they're becoming more reasonable. Although the 1 1. 'lire is still much too high for a Triple-A franchise, it isn't nearly as ridiculous as the half-million dollars they demanded before. "They paid $100,000 for the club and that's what we'll give them even though it isn't worth it. We won't be blackjacked into paying exorbitant indemnities." Meanwhile, a new problem arose in Continental plans for lo cation of a franchise in Montreal, should the Houston attempt fail. "From what I've seen of Mon treal in the last two years, I don't consider this city a major league town," said former major leaguer Clay Bryant, manager of the Mon treal Royals of the International League. "Ten years ago Montreal was the best city in the minor leagues." Bryant said. "But in 1938 we had a pennant winner, an exciting team, yet wo were out drawn by Toronto and Buffalo." Another problem, Bryant said, is the CL's search for enough ma jor league players. "There were fewer than six in the entire International League last season who could have played in the majors," Bryant said. "We didn't have any." The odds for a perfect game in bowling are about one million to one. ; AHH-CASABAS Southern Oregon's Glen Peterson takes a deep breath in the game between SOC and Oregon Tech Tuesday night and gets a nose full of basketball for hit ; trouble.
