Monday, January 25. lOfiO PACE FIVE Demo Leaders Not Ready To Decide On Candidate WASHINGTON (AP) Demo cratic leaders controlling major blocs of parly power remained un-f-commitled on a party nominee to day after a weekend parade of presidential hopefuls. With former President Harry S. Truman setting a "give 'cm hell" pace, four major and several min or contenders for top place on the ticket tried out their personalities and oratorical persuasion on 2.500 party members at a $100 a plate fund-raising dinner here. The upshot seemed to be that nobody started any bandwagons rolling. This was confirmed by a check of the men in a position to control ' the big-vote delegations likely to have the final say in any down-to-the-wire contest that de velops in the Los Angeles conven tion. Truman, who retains strong in fluence with a minority segment of the party, dealt something of a blow to the incipient candidacy of sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo), when he told the group he has no commitments on any presidential aspirant. Symington has been counting heavily on Truman's sup port. Truman also took what ap peared to be an indirect swipe at Adlai Stevenson, the man he want ed as a candidate in 1952 and didn't want in 1956. Stevenson von the nomination but lost the Assistant Prof. Becomes Intern NEW YORK (AP) - The Citi- tenship Clearing House Sunday sqid a college professor will work as a government intern with Gov. Hark Hatfield of Oregon. Assigned to work with Hatfield is Dr. Conrad Joyncr, assistant professor at Southwestern Louisi ana Institute. He is one of three men picked for the program, fi nanced by a Ford Foundation grant. The program is designed to Improve political science instruc tion and to "bring to state gov ernments the services of. profes sional scholars." Republicans Plan Dinner Meeting PORTLAND (API - Two key meetings will be held here Wed resday by Oregon Republicans. , Out of the meetings, said John Merrifield, may come the names of some of the Republicans who will enter races for the House and Senate in the May primary. Both the Republican State Cen tral Committee and the Candi dates Assistance Committee will meet, said Merrifield. He is chair man of the letter committee. Merrifield said about 1,000 per sons also are expected to attend a $100-a-plate fund raising dinner here Wednesday night. The feat ured speaker will be Defense Secretary Thomas Gates. - election both times. Truman said that, in addition to having the necessary qualifica tions for office, the man he sup ports is going to have "the. ability as well to arouse the support of the people to vote him into office." Stevenson, who did not attend the dinner, sent a message in which he called for maintenance of military strength, controlled disarmament, wider research, bet ter education and "a greater thrust into outer space." It pro voked only routine applause. New York leaders, nominally headed by National Committee man Carmine De Sapio, gave no evidence of unity behind any sin gle candidate. Although there were reports that sentiment for Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass) might be strong among prospective dele gates, there was no jelling of sent iment at the top. Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago and tol. Jacob Arvey, Illinois na tional committeeman, conspicuous- ly gave equal applause to Ken nedy and Sens. Lyndon B. John son (D-Tex.), and Hubert Humph rey (D-Minn). Kennedy and Humphrey are announced candi dates. Johnson is unavowed but obviously is available. Daley said he does not expect the hefty Illinois delegation to de cide which candidate it will sup port until the July convention gets under way. Arvey, who is cred ited in some quarters with being a Symington man, said he thinks he and Daley can agree on an aspirant. But he insisted no de cision . will be forthcoming for months. Gov. David Lawrence, who hopes to lead an uninstructed 81- vote delegation into the conven tion from Pennsylvania, said he isn't making any decision between possible cadidates now. Gov. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown of California insisted all he wants is to be let alone as a favorite son candidate. He said that if he gets this designation in the state's June 7 primary there will be plon ty of time to decide on which candidate to support. Brown shopped around, visiting most of the hopefuls. Govs. G. Mennen Williams of Michigan and Robert F. Meyner of New Jersey, who seem likely to be favorite sons, got in some strategic licks that conceivably could lead to a second-place nomination. ' Russ General Death Noted MOSCOW (AP) An official obituary signed by high ranking army leaders Sunday announced the de)!h of Gen. Mikhail Malinin, 60, who commanded Soviet troops that put down the Hungarian re volt. The obituary made no mention of his part in the 1956 Hungarian uprising. Sweetland Hits Business Drops COOS BAY (AP)-Coos County Democrats were told at a plat form convention Saturday that Oregon's business failure rate is the top for any state in the nation. State Sen. Monroe Sweetland (D-Milwaukic) said Eisenhower administration policies are primarily responsible. He said Oregon in 1958 had 201.5 recorded business failures for every 10,000 businesses and, "no other state in the union is even close." Sweetland told the Democrats that Oregon's. basic industry, lum ber, has been badly crippled by administration tight-money poli cies that injure home building. He predicted another 10 per cent decline in new housing starts over the country this year, and added: "The grim truth is that Oregon's economy will once again be hard hit because 85 per cent of Ore gon's Douglas fir lumber produc tion is used in residential con struction." Crash Claims Albany Driver ALBANY (AP) An Albany man was killed Saturday night when the car he was driving careened off the Albany-Oakville Road some five miles south of here and struck a tree, police said. Deputy Coroner Walter Krott said Kenneth Hanby, 39, the vic tim, was driving alone. The Romanian-born chauffeur, Andre Porumbcanu, 35. with whom Miss Benedict sailed on a freighter for an escapade in Paris, remained there in mournful seclu sion. He and the girl had said they wanted to marry after he could get a divorce. The New York Daily News said in a copyrighted story that he talked Sunday by phone wilh Miss Benedict. Sharpe. who gave custody of the girl and her brother lo Mrs. Ben edict after the 1946 suicide of the children's mother. Josephine Ben edict Sharpe. insisted that he has "every right" to see his daughter. After he and his present wife. Marylyn. were turned away at the door of the Benedict mansion, his son told newsmen: "My sister does not want to talk lo my father. She told me that as emphatically as possible. She doesn't want any help from her father his help is not wanted. He does not deserve that privilege." Mrs. Sharpe' took an overdose of sleeping pills' after a quarrel with Sharpe. Following her death, the psychiatrist waived his one-third interest, estimated at $350,000, in her estate. Later, however, Sharpc changed his mind and sought to get his share.
