Jan. 13. 10R0 Grinding Car-Truck Crash Kills Four In Lane County EUGENE (AP) For the sec ond time in less than three weeks a grinding "car-truck crash has killed four persons in . Oregon's Lane County. A huge truck-trailer rig collided with and then overturned onto a car on a snow-covered mountain highway Monday. The four per sons in (he car were killed. The four were on a trip when their journey ended in death in the Cascade Mountains 50 miles southeast of here. All were in their 50s or 60s. In the earlier accident, four University of Washington students perished Dec. 29 in the collision of Ihcir ear with a truck five miles north of here. They had been en route to California for the Hose Bowl game. State police said the dead in the Monday accident were Dudley T. Boyd, 57, Eugene; his wife, 52; Littleton Lasater, 62, Cottage Grove; and his wife, 58. The driver of the truck, Clyde Thomas, 33, Fresno, Calif., said he saw the car head into his lane in a driving snowstorm. Thomas said he blinked his lights to alert the driver of the car, then put on his brakes. State police said the car and the truck collided, the truck then overturning onto the auto. The car was crushed beneath the 72,000 pounds of the truck and its prod uce cargo. Neither Thomas nor his relief driver, Bob Lichti, 28, Fresno, was hurt. The truck was owned by Cal-Can Trucking Co. of Fresno. 'Tlie car was so twisted and smashed the bodies couldn't be moved until the car was towed to Oakridge and cut up," a state policeman said. With the truck lying across the road, traffic on Highway 58 was stopped completely for nearly four hours. Cars wire backed up more than a mile in each direction. Later, a wrecker moved the truck enough so that one-way travel could be resumed. The two couples were en route to Reno when the accident oc curred. It was Oregon's worst traffic accident of the new year, and pushed the state's highway toll to 10 so far in 19B0, in the Associated Press tabulation. Turn Signals Put On Ship NEW YORK (API When the freighter Golden Eagle is going to make a turn, even a landlubber will know which way. The Golden Eagle has king-size turn signals, like the ones on cars only these are visible for up to three miles. The Military Sea Transportation Service said Tuesday the arrow shaped lights had been installed is an experiment in finding ways to prevent ship collisions. Lloyd's of London estimates there is an average of 45 such collisions a week. Rear Adm. J. C. Dempscy, com mander of MSTS' Atlantic area, explained that many collisions re sult from confusion, rather than the lack of visibility. Whistle sig nals sometimes get drowned out by engine noise or other sounds. The Golden Eagle is believed to be the first American ship equipped with the signals. Dutch ships have had them for some time. "Alsaska" is the Russian ver sion of an Eskimo word for the Alaskan Peninsula. if Ftif K ' fit j& IS iT- kits'. L-k E. A. The possibility of increasing them will be foremost in Lopez Mateos' talks. Always in the background will be Mexico's intermediary position between the United States and the other countries of Latin America. The position is as political as it is geographical. Mexico favors good ncighborliness in its ties with the United States, but it avoids letting them become unduly inti mate. Lopez Mateos and his govern ment are convinced that among I the Latin-American nations there are spiritual and economic re sources, active and latent, which can be harnessed for the common good. The search for ways to ex ploit them is the goal of his un precedented tour. LADIES! Would you like a new $50,000 home, FREE?
