Sunday, January 10, IflfiO PAGE 5-C Past Decade Changes Community By THKLMA OWEN GREENVIEW There have been changes in the small community of Greenview and surrounding ter ritory in the past decade. The Greenview (ire department was or ganized February 29, 1952 and prop erty was leased from Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Whipple on which to erect a cinder-block building to house the (ire engine. Everett Mallow has succeeded Garland Sheffield as (ire chief. The fire department sponsored street lights which were installed March 2, 1953. The new state highway going through Scott Valley is finished (rom the top of the Yreka-Fort Jones mountain to just south of Greenview. It has been realigned to completely bypass the town. The flood of December, 1955, washed out the bridge south of town, and one south of Fort Jones washed out approaches to the Crystal Creek bridge between Greenview and Etna and the one on the Scott River by the Meam ber schoolhouse and did much dam age to adjacent fields. The forest (ire west and south west of Greenview in September o( 1958 burned thousands o( (eet of (ine timber. Good timber- re maining was logged off during the next two years. In 1958, the residents of Green view voted to join the Etna Ele mentary School District and a bus now takes children to school each morning and returns them in the evening. The high school bus, driv en by Merwyn Rickey, teacher In the high school, takes students to Etna. Scott Valley Grange has remod eled the hall at Greenview. The Perry Harris Post of the Amer ican Legion at Greenview has re modeled its hall. Veterans of For eign Wars Hall in Greenview has been sold to Mrs. Evelyn Edwards of Quartz Valley. In 1959, the dial telephone sys tem came to Greenview. Many of the old houses have been renovated and some new ones have been erected. The ilrv wealher of 1959 and ex tremely cold temperatures of the past couple of weeks have caused many wells to dry up and pipes to freeze. SHORT CHANGE ERROR ATLANTA (UPI) Slate Au ditor B. E.
