PAGE EIGHT NY, Rams Rumbling Over Ace NEW YORK (AP) Who said there's not going to be a pro football war? The rumblings reached the shooting stage today when the New York Giants and L,os Angeles Rams of the National Football League threatened to take legal steps to keep their holds on two All-Americas fullback Charlie Flowers of Mississippi and Half back Billy Cannon of Louisiana State. Flowers announced Monday that he had signed with the Los An geles Chargers of the American Football League. "We have a legal contract with Flowers and will take steps neces sary to enforce that contract, thundered Jack Mara, president of the Giants. Mara was the second NFL owner who threatened to take his case to the courts. Only last week, the Rams com plained that All-America Cannon ran out on a contract and threat ened to go to court to enforce it Cannon admitted Monday night In Honolulu, where he is to appear in the Hula Bowl, that he had signed a three-year contract with the Houston Oilers of the AFL right after the Sugar Bowl game New Year's Day. He conceded that he had come to some sort of verbal agreement with the Rams, but later changed his mind. General Manager Pete Rozell of the Rams said the club has a written agreement with Cannon "and we intend to enforce it." Just a month ago, bigwigs of both the NFL and AFL disclaimed any intention of getting involved in a costly salary war. Fans Greet Husky Heroes SEATTLE (AP) - A crowd estimated at 2,500 braved light snow, rain and temperatures in the low 30s to give the University of Washington football team a rousing welcome home Monday night. The Huskies, fresh from their 44-8 upset of Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl Jan. 1, arrived at the Seat- tle-Tacoma International Airport by chartered airplane shortly aft er 10 p.m., about an hour behind schedule. On hand were civic and stale dignitaries, including Gov. Rosel Iini. Seattle Mayor Gordon Clinton handed the keys to the city to George Fleming and Bob Schlo redt, co-winners of the Helms Trophy, awarded to the outstand ing players of the Rose Bowl game. Schloredt, the Huskies' one eyed All-America quarterback, was the first to step from the plane amidst a rousing cheer from the chilled onlookers. Wild Card Does The Job SMU's Meek Wants Grid Rules Unchanged; AFCA Committee Meets In Closed Session NEW YORK (AP) "A return to two-platoon football would be taking the easy way out," Coach Bill Meek of Southern Methodist said today. Kenneth Keating (R-NY) in what may be the first step toward asking Congress to help the in fant league get on its feet. Founder William Shea of the Continental League described the meeting as an "informal talk de signed to learn Sen. Keating's thoughts on the matter of base ball and the Continental League. However, in announcing the meeting, Keating's office noted that league President Branch Rickey and Shea reportedly have decided the time has come to seek aid from Congress or the courts. The two men were dissatisfied with an American League denial last month that it plans any ex pansion at present. They also want assurance for the future. The new circuit plans to begin play in 1951. The possibility one of the older leagues might expand into one of the new league's pro posed cities could kill off any chance of a potential franchise owner there joining the Continen tal League. As a member of the House two years ago, Keating sponsored a bill to exempt all but the com mercial aspects of organized sports from federal antitrust laws, The bill passed the House but died in the Senate antimonopoly subcommittee. Quick. Baird Lead Golfers LOS ANGELES (AP) - Smiley Quick and Butch Baird fired 68s on separate windswept courses Monday to lead 61 other qualifiers for the $44,500 Los Angeles Open Golf Tournament. Quick, veteran Downey, Calif., professional, played his 18-hoIe qualifying round at the Brentwood course while Baird, of Beaumont, Tex., teed off at South Hills. Both layouts are par 71. Since many top competitors were exempt from the qualifying round, only a few name players were among 300-plus who failed to make the grade. Mike Fetchick, who won three important tournaments four years ago, shot an 81 at Wilshire, where a 74 or better was needed. Tournament play in this 34th edition of the open begins Friday at the Municipal Rancho course. The starting field will be 150. JackTwyman Point Leader NEW YORK (AP) Cincinnati's Jack Twyman rolls along for the fourth straight week as top scorer in the National Basketball Assn. although Philadelphia's Wilt Chamberlain has the best per game average. Twyman, star of the Western Division's last place club, has scored 1,267 points in 40 games for an average of 31.6 per game. Wilt, the Stilt, however, has 1,172 points in 32 games for a 3S.6 aver age. The NBA determines its lead er by total points, not averages. The NBA figures, released to day, include games of Sunday. Chamberlain, in second place, has a big margin over third-placer Bob Pcttit of St. Louis. The Hawk ace has 909 points in 34 games for a 26.7 average. Next comes Elgin Baylor of Minneapolis with 855 points in 31 games for a 27.6 average. Sports Car Ace In Divorce Suit OLATHE, Kan. (AP) Luella S. Gregory Monday filed for a divorce from Masten Gregory, 27, international sports car racing driver, charging extreme cruelty. Gregory, rated fifth best driver in England, races for a British sports car manufacturer. Mrs. Gregory asked $500 a month alimony, $1,000 a month for support of their four children, sole ownership of their home in a Kan sas City suburb, and half interest in stock and other property. She estimated Gregory's income at more than $50,000 a year. Ron Stehouwer. 237-pound senior tackle for Colorado State Univer sity, has been drafted for the 1960 season by the Detroit Lions. Tuesday, January 5, 1960 west Conference title, agreed with Meek. "Too many coaches are for unlimited substitution, most of them younger fellows," he said. "The game is OK now. The 'wild card' player does the job for us." Martin referred to the rule, passed last year by the NCAA football rules committee, which permits substitution of a single player anytime the clock is stopped, without the substitution counting toward the legal limit, The AFCA committee conducts a survey of all member coaches, then uses it as a guide on which to base recommendations to the NCAA committee. The NCAA group will meet next week in Miami to consider the coaches' recommendations. The majority of coaches at the major schools seem to want un limited substitution and the two platoon play that would result. It has been a complaint of coaches and fans, too, that the recording of substitutions by the officials has caused too much delay of the game. Most coaches agreed that the two-point conversion option and the wider goal posts, other recent rule changes, were a good thing.
