Mm 4m ill AM Gas Merger Given Okay WASHINGTON (AP)-The Fed cral Power Commission today au Ihorized the merger of Pacific Northwest Pipeline Corp. into the El Paso Natural Gas Co. Under the merger, El Paso will lake over and operate the P.NP pipeline which carries natural gas from New Mexico to Pacific Northwest states. El Paso owns 99.8 per cent of PNP's common stock but the pipe line has been operating independ ently as a subsidiary of El Paso. Under the commission order El Paso will be required to keep sep arate books as requested by Cali fornia gas distributing companies which had voiced fear their cus tomers might have to pay higher rates as a result of the merger. The PNP pipeline has been los ing money for years. El Paso operates a pipeline In several Western and Midwest states. It plans to import gas from Canada through the PNP pipeline and will increase supplies going to California. Commission Examiner Daniel J. Kelly recommended, following long hearings, that the merger be permitted. The FPC legal staff op posed it on grounds it would be monopolistic. The commission agreed with Kelly that the merger would be in the public interest from the stand point of improved gas supply and utilization of gas reserves, a fi nancially stronger supplier, ex panded and improved gas service and potential rate reductions. No Limit Set On Tank Size ASTORIA (AP) The Astoria City Council has decided not to limit the size of gasoline tank trucks operating in the city. Fire Chief Wayne Osterby asked the size of the trucks be restrict ed to those with 1,300 gallons ca pacity. He said the discharge of large quantities of vapor by the big trucks when they unload at gasoline stations was hazardous. But oil company representatives said frequent deliveries by small trucks presented more of a hazard. Osterby said he was concerned about possible collection of explo sive mixtures in tunnels which run under the streets of Astoria. DOORS OPEN 12:45 P.M. TODAY! Jonel C. Hill, public utilities commissioner, said an impending shortage of wood chip cars might become a threat to the chip in dustry. Hill said the officials will be asked to explain why the storage of SP cars in Southern Oregon has been almost depleted at a time when freight cars usually are in adequate supply. The two railroad officials who will come here arc W. C. Peoples, vice president in charge of traf fic, and W. D. Lamprecht, gen eral manager. PNW Chamber Favors Park PORTLAND (AP)-Sen. Rich ard L. Neiibcrger (D-Ore) said Wednesday he had received word that the Yachats Chamber nf Commerce favors establishment of an Oregon Dunes national sea shore park. Neuherser is author of a bill that would create the nark in'lho dunes between Florence and Reedsport on the Oregon coast. Many residents of the Florence area are opposed to the park. achats is a few miles north of the park site.
