ICE SKATING facilities near Moore Park were opened to the public Saturday night and
the rink was mobbed by more than 400 skaters of all ages. They and City Park and
Recreation Department personnel waited patiently through spurts of thawing weather until
the ice pack built finally to a six-inch depth. The rink features a big, wood-heated warm
ing hut and a concession stand. Skating on th e 400 foot by 65 foot rink is free from 7 p.m.
until 10 p.m. nightly. The rink will close Christmas night.
Police Seek Sly Promoter
HANF0RD (UPI) Police,
have issued an all-points bulletin
for tile arrest of Samuel Rayburn
Zehr, the promoter of a nonexis
tent cotton-picking machine ac
cused of leaving town with $44,446
in cash and a truckload of unpaid
for home furnishings.
Officers said Zchr left a trail
of debts totaling $63,000. His prin-,
cipal cash victim was identified
as Dr. Arthur Ziesmer, a Hanford
physician who invested $39,350 in
the cotton gleaner Zchr said he
planned to produce.
Zchr, 36, and his wife, Jose
phine, 33, were named in a felony
complaint listing 13 counts - of
grand theft and two counts of em
bezzlement. Bail was set at $100,
000 on each count, a total of $1,
500.000 in all.
Police said the Zehrs and their
five children departed Thanksgiv
ing night in a big truck loaded
with everything movable, includ
ing an expensive stereophonic rec
ord player and an electric organ.
"Just about every merchant in
Hanford got hurt," Kings County
Deputy Sheriff Harold McConnell
said. "This guy was an extremely
good talker. I have a report he
also took a Pasadena doctor for
$70,000 to develop a cancer machine."
Among Zehr's victims was the
Elco Manufacturing Company of
Bakersfield, producer of house
trailers. District Attorney Charles
F. Leach said Elco was on the
verge of bankruptcy because it
never collected on a consignment
ol trailers sent to Zehr. He said
Zchr had sold the trailers on the
installment plan and pocketed
$5,096 of the initial payments.
Leach said the other victims in
eluded several clothing stores.
to finance companies, shoe stores
jewelers, and suppliers of male
rials for spindle nuts Zehr manu
factured for cotton-picking mach
ines.
"He made money simply by not
paying for his materials or la
bor," Leach said of the spindle
nut enterprise.
Mrs. Zehr was also active. She
bought more than $500 worth of
clothing just before the couple de
parted, according to McConnell.
No one saw the Zehrs, who
came here two years ago, leave
town.
