FROM SPAIN, the storied
land of gallantry and beauti
ful women, comes a spark
ling perfume, "Joya," to il
luminate the Christmas sea
son. "Joya," translated into
English, means "jewel," and
jewel translated into per
fume means "Joya." The
perfume is from Myrurgia.

place under every Christinas tree
when there are feminine hearts to
please.
Dorothy Gray has a selection of
pretty presents to appeal to many
tastes. There are five distinctive
fragrance series for adults and
one for little girls: Voltage, Nose
gay, Aureate, Figurine, White Li
lr.c, and Hidden Charm. In individ
ual items and sets, all have a
fresh, contemporary look.
Voltage has brilliance and excite
ment. Its perfume, cologne, dusting
powder and sets are done in lus
trous black, with the name in
raised letters, alternating crimson,
orange and bright pink. Concen
trate deluxe mist comes in a black
metal dispenser with gold metal
medallion. Dusting powder has a
fluffy, flame-colored puff. The scent
is a sophisticated blend of florals
with woodsy moss.
Dorothy Gray's Aureate series is
in rich cream and gold. There is
one huge box of dusting powder
with fluffy, champagne - colored
putf. Essence comes in slender,
tear - drop bottles that look like
crystal. There are also perfume,
soap, an atomist purser, and sev
eral sets. Aureate fragrance com
bines rose and jasmine with a
breath of sandalwood.
Nosegay, dainty and modern, is
n series packaged in shiny, marsh
mallow white, decorated with styl
ized nosegays in pink, blue and
green. The names, Nosegay and
Dorothy Gray, in pink and blue
letters, curve fancifully down from
the bouquets, like two streamers.
The feeling is one of youth and
inv, and the scent is reminiscent
of a springtime garden.
f igurine series, in black and gold
packages with ballet dancer mo
tif, has a wide range of prepara
lions, newest of which is a con
centrate atomist in tall, black plastic-coated
bottle. Figurine is a joy
ous scent with a bit of a punch.
In a different mood is White
Lilac, a dainty and delicate group,
with the true lilac fragrance. I'ack
.Tics are white, embossed in white
with lilac (lower motif, and band

JOYA
Our American Christmas Is a
happy blend of many customs,
both pagan and Christian, from
many lands and long ago. Yet
each country that has contribut
ed to our celebration retains cer
tain customs uniquely and charm
ingly their own.
In Spain, for instance, gifts are
mostly toys and candies for chil
dren given on the Day of the
Three Kings, January 6, which
ends the holiday season. It begins
on December 8 with the feast of
the Immaculate Conception; and
early in December, street stalls
are set up for selling nativity
ccfies and special Christmas can
dies. The beautiful and ornate
churches are illuminated from
within to cast the radiance of
festivities.
On Christmas Eve, "Noche Bu-
ena." meaning literally, "good
night," there is revelry reminis
cent of our New Year's Eve when
the celebrants wear paper hats,
blow horns, and shout and sing
all night. At midnight mass, the
Spanish people join with those all
over the Christian world, in sing
ing old Christmas carols called
"villancicos."
As typically Spanish as these
Christmas traditions is Myrurgia's
beloved fragrance, "Joya," (pro
nounced hoya and meaning "jew
el). A gift of Joya carries
with it a bit of Spain, a touch
of the Old World, a special kind
of charm. Since it's not custo
mary for adults to exchange gifts
at Christmas in the land of the
castanets, American women can
count themselves far luckier than
their Spanish sisters. An Amer
ican Christmas without at least
one gift of perfume would make
any of us feel as deprived as the
Spanish child who receives lumps
of coal instead of candy if he's
been naughty.
Surprisingly, perhaps, "Joya" is
the type of fragrance American
women prefer, being a tender bou
quet based on jasmine (the flower
"jewel" of perfume), faceted for
sparkle with carnation spice, and
glowing deeply with a woodsy
freshness. The perfume is the
prize jewel, a dazzling gift of
fragrance. But there are also
jewel-matched toilet water and co
lcgne, reflecting the brilliance of
the perfume. Each is set in a
jewel-faceted flacon. A gift of any
one, or any combination of these
three fragrance treasures, is
"jewel of a gift" to any woman
