Dr. Carr spent 87 years In American schoolrooms as a stu dent, teacher, principal, college dean and president and historian Me helped establish and became the first president of Murray .Stale Col'cge in Murray, Ky., serving from 11)23 to I'Jji. Now retired, he lives here with a grandson. Dr. Carr remembers the quaint names of the rural Indiana of his youth. 'I was born on Goose Creek. brought up on Black Ankle, learned to swim in Fuss Creek, went to school at Hard Scrabble and tried to go with a girl in Snake Hollow," he says. Dr. Carr's father was a farmer and "poor as church mice," he recalls. "Father and I only had one good hat between us, so only one of us could go to church on Sunday." He first entered a classroom in 1866 when he was 7. The Civil War had just ended and President ndrew Johnson was in the White House. When he was 17 he started teaching at another one - room school in a neighboring county. While he never dated the girl in Snake 'Hollow, he did meet and later marry one of his students They had one daughter and three sons. One son, Harry, is alive. He is a New York insurance man Dr. Carr's wife Rachel died in 1!)27. Dr. Carr received only $1.25 a day for a five-month term in his first teaching job. But he lived to teach. "I think he would have taught for nothing," his son says. Dr. Carr got his bachelor's de gree at Indiana University in 1885. He later look graduate studies at Columbia University here and in 11)13 got his doctorate in philosophy. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Den nis Hall, extension pathologist, will speak about spud diseases; Dr. Herman Timm, department of veg etable crops, will discuss potato fertilizer needs; Dr. John McLean, extension potato specialist, will ex amine markets and production problems, and Robert Kasmire. extension field technologist, will review potato keeping quality and marketing results. Ken Baghott, Tulelake farm ad viser, will present a summary of local potato trials. He urges those interested to attend. Burn Charges Dismissal Set BAKER, Ore. (AP)-A youth ol 17 told a justice court hearing here Thursday he lied when he told that he and two other persons burned down three houses, au thorities said. Alter the statement by John Loosli. 17, Hallway, Ore., charges of arson against two persons were dropped. The youth is on proba tion from the MacLaren Schol for Boys. Salem. Police took l.oosli into custody after an arson investigation of (ires which destroyed three vacant houses Nov. 17 in Richland, Ore. He later testified at a hearing for .lames S. SEC Officer In Death Plunge NEW YORK (AP)-A senior en forcement officer for the Federal Securities and Exchange Commis sion here, Edward O. Rcid. plunged to his death Thursday from his 23rd floor office. Police listed the death as due to a fall or leap. Reid. 55, a bachelor, had been with the SEC more than 20 years. He had an excellent record and had given no indication of illness or mental slrain, said Paul Win- dels, SEC regional administrator. (AP)-A New Orleans boy nabbed by FBI mei here has nonchalantly related th' grisly details of how he killed i schoolmate. Frank Nicholas Chisesi, 15. smiled as he chatted with news men alter his arrest by the FBI Thursday. The slight youth with curly, black hair had been hunted in connection with the slaying o( Rhett Blanke, also 15, of Violet. La. Blanke was found on a levee of the Mississippi River Tuesday shot and slabbed to death. He was nearly decapitated from the knif ing. Chisesi said he asked Blanke to go hunting with him Tuesday. It was the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and they had a holiday from the Roman Catholic school where they were sophomores. Chisesi said he intended to kill Blanke because Blanke "aggra vated" him at school. But he told reporters, "When I go 'to court I'm going to plead self defense. I can prove I shot him in self defense " Chisesi said when they got to the hunting ground Blanke "started shooting all the shells up, shooting at my feet. "I just got m-ad, took the gun away from him and started shoot ing at him. Then I stabbed him." Chisesi said he stabbed Blanke "because he was still breathing.
