Parker ,i taid the three were released be cause the case remained too com plex to seek complaints from the district attorney's office. Stale law requires a suspect be released within 43 hours of arrest if no complaint is filed. Earlier, the Grand Jury an nounced it would open a full-scale investigation into the gangland style killing Tuesday. The jury's criminal committee was ordered into session Friday while police attempted to unravel numerous stories about Whalen's threat to turn "stool pigeon" against competitive bookmakers. There will be bonuses in quan tityand i( they are based as is usual on the volume of tradin; the lake ought to set a new hi;:h for several decades. Trading in stocks .right now is th best since lfloO and if the current rale continues the year 1!W9 will be the best in market volume since 1!U9. Banks also have had a good year with money in demand at high rales they should be gootl bonus payers, according to those who are on the receiving end. Many corporations also arc generous bonus payers when prof' its are large. This year because of the steel strike there may be a contraction from the corporate level. Anyhow, taken altogether it should be a happy Christmas for thousands of workers in Wall Street and Main Street. Wall Street, as it always does at this time of year, is drumming up its own wares as Christmas gifts. The slock exchange firm of Francis I. du Pont & Co., has just issued a little pamphlet en titled "Securities For Christmas A Present With A, Future. The firm has made up some neat little packages as suggestions for gifts at this time. There's one which costs $3,00(1 and delivers a dividend check every month. The yield on that Of Mart f Yule mm m m m one averages 4.7 per cent. There also is another $.i.oon Ininvlle called a high yielding fund which averages a return of 5.1 per cent. Another Si.txm job is entitled the "Half Century Dividend Pay ing Club." This one yields 4.7 per com. The dividends on one of the stocks go hack to lS.il The others range from 1SH4 to 1IKI2. The Du Pont firm has a series of issues that cost around SHOO lor anywhere from 10 lo 4,i shares. These yield from 2.9 per cent to 5.7 per cent. And there is a whole list of $3,000 packages, which return from 4.1 per cent lo 5.3 per cent. A batch of $ii.iHH) packages in clude groups of conservative stocks, stocks of medium caliber, and more speculative issues. There are two bond packages which is an addition over those of previous years, indicating that people are thinking of bonds these days even though they haven't run wild buying them. There is a $10,000 package of high grade bonds. And there the yield averages 5.14 per cent. A $5,000 package of convertible bonds and preleired stocks, in cludes two bonds and three pre ferred stocks and this group yields 5.11 per cent. Record Firms Get Warning WASHINGTON' UPI The overnment Saturday gave nine ecord companies 30 days lo an swer charges they "deceived the public" by giving hidden gifts or l cash to radio and TV disc joc keys to have records plugged. The Federal Trade Commission FTC) look its first firm action to- crack down on reports of wide spread payola practices Friday by filing separate complaints against three record manufacturers, in cluding the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and six distribu tors. The FTC did not disclose the names of any disc jockeys who. it said, took under-the-table pay ments to play a single record as many as six to 10 times a day on their popular music programs. Advisory Council Held By Demos NEW YORK (AP) Former President Truman and a number of other Democratic notables Sat urday attended a Democratic ad visory council meeting that opened a three-day political whirl. A number of possibilities for the party's presidential nomination were on hand. Paul M. Butler, Democratic national chairman, presided at the closed session in the Waldorf,- Astoria Hotel the first time the council nas mel in ivew vorK City. The federal agency, in addition to naming RCA of New York. also filed the complaint against two other record manufacturers- London Records, Inc., of New York and Bernard Lowe Enter prises, Inc., of Philadelphia. The six record distributors named in a separate complaint were Edward S. Barsky, Inc.; Chips Distributing Co., Inc.; Dav id Rosen, Inc.; Universal Record Distributing Corp., and Sparks Music Distributors, Inc., all of Philadelphia: and Main Line Cleveland, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio. In Cleveland Main Line adver tising director James Shipley ad mitted his company had sent regular checks to disc jockeys Joe Finan and Wes Hopkins, who were fired Thursday by station KWY' in Cleveland for accepting payola. But Shipley said his firm was only a middleman "the deal was between the factory (RCAl and the disc jockey." Edward S. Barsky said his firm had "no comment" to make on the federal action, but he ac knowledged it had received the FTC complaint. RCA and London records in New York also withheld comment. The FTC charged that the nine firms had "deceived the public' by paying platter spinners to pop ularize their records through re peated plays of the product on the air.
