Big Success NEW YORK (API - An explo live little man who once stood New York City on its political car jets a rousing salute in the new Broadway musical, "Kiorcllo!" The show, an arrial Monday Bight at the Broadhurst Theater, is an entertainment landslide even for a spectator from afar who may somehow have missed hearing o! the preliminary years of Fiorello H. La Cuardia. the reform mayor of the big town in the IMOs and 40s. Mixing sentiment, satire and elections, 'fiorello!" rampages through the zestful era from World War I into the roaring HCO's. The frenzied rhythm of the period gives director George Ahhott full opportunity tn indulse his flair for high pitched movement and coloration. In the title role a Broadway newcomer, Tom Bosley, performs with polished verve in interpreting the bombastic outer eccentricities ann the compusions beneath the surface La Guardia. Outstanding in their roles arc Patricia Wilson and Ellen Han ley, two charming singers; Pat Stanley, a gamin dancing sprite; and Howard Da Silva, the epitome of political ward bosses. Composer Jerry Bock and lyric ist Sheldon Harnick have fitted Eiorello!" with several lively melodies and Peter Gennaro has steered the dancing contingent with virp and precision. JEWS Vevs Shakespearean Festival Termed Shattering Success ASHLAND !!'5i's premiere sea- dium-type seating capacity tor By TIM MASON When the Klamath Krater, KU's student newspaper, came out on Friday, some of the members on the staff were questioned by stu dents on why the paper is coming out only once a month. In the issue unda uundcrson explained n ner editorial wny tne crater is only putting out 10 issues tnis year. The reason is higher costs in putting out the paper, which the financial status of the Krater can't cover. Krater gels its money trom advertising and is also alotted $1.00 from every script book sold to students. Bealizing this, a Krater official ent to Student Council with three proposed plans, asking for addi tional money to help put out the paper. They were to put out 18, 12, or 10 issues. However, they were met by op position from the members of the council who protested that the Kra ter shouldn't get the money bc- ause students don't care to read the paper, they already know what news there is, and all-in-all, Krater was putting out a publication that the students don't like to read. Most important, Student Council didn't have the money because, they put it, they , handled their money too loosely mis year, ana they might be short of funds for the regular items on the budget for this year. But when the paper was is ued Friday, the majority of stu dents howled if they didn't get their paper. Almost everyone was buried in a paper, wondering out loud why Krater wasn't coming out more often. Apparently these students didn't peak up at the time, when the Student Council was debating this matter. Or perhaps they weren't represented by their class repre sentative or informed of the pro ceedings. Other instances, as in the Kra tcr case, have occurred where some representatives were found not properly doing their job. . In Hie last Student Council meet ing, half of the representatives didn't take the question of the Polio Drive back to their first pe riod classes and vole on it as they were told to. Too many instances have come up where a large number of stu dents weren't informed of the mat ter voted on by the council and didn't have their say. Their rep resentative didn't report back to them for three reasons. (1) Their instructor didn't allow time for.thc student council report. 2) The representative didn't bother to give the report. (3) The representatives didn't go to the meeting. The student body ofliccrs and most of the representatives spend many extra hours after school. They do a very fine job, and are highly praised for their outstand ing work by the teachers. But those few that don't, arc slowly destroying the democracy of Student Council, where the student has his say and his vote. How can Student Council act on matters that will affect all the students, when some students didn't know about, or have their say in the matter? Those representatives, who don't regularly attend the meet ings and know they aren't doing their job, should realize how they nre hurting the school and get on the ball. For those who can't well, as some angered unrepre sented students feel they need to be replaced. son for the Oregon' Shakespearean Festival's new audience-built Eliz abethan Theater scored a record shattering success. According to revised figures just released by William Pal'.on, general manager, 3G,."N3 persons attended the sum mer's 40-night run. That is an in crease of 23.4 per cent over the 1!I53 season. Patton also announced that the total gate, averaged over the en tire production period, proved to be an amazing 80.1 per cent of the house capacity. The newly re vamped bowl area provides a sta Board Delays PSC Planning PORTLAND (AP) - Oregon's Board of Higher Education today postponed a decision on whether the future of Portland State Col lege lies in an extended campus or in multi-story buildings. It left the way open for the latter, however, by authorizing enough additional steel in the sec ond new classroom building to support a tower. Built now are a four-story library and a similar-height class room building. They are connected by an overhead walkway over the street, as well as by a tunnel. The second classroom building will be similarly connected to thete two, and the three then will form a cluster planned for future exten sion upwards to eight stories. 1,142 at each performance, Audience members again in 1959 represented all 50 states and sev eral other nations, with mail or dcr tabulations showing substantial gains in out-of-state patronage. But the increase in the number of Ore gonians attending was especially remarkable. On July 28 the largest opening night crowd in history, a complete sellout, witnessed the launching of a new season and a new theater.
