Photo by Kite Triple Crown Winner Set For Finale STOCKTON (UPI) - Mighty Dick Bass bids farewell to col legiate football tonight when he leads the College of the Pacific against San Jose State before a prnuH nf ahnut 1(1 MO at Pacific Memorial Stadium. Bass, who won the NCAA's "triple crown" last year in rush ing, total offense and scoring, has played on a game leg most of this season but it seems well healed for his COP finale. Bass scored on a 51-yard touch down gallop against Idaho last week and also grabbed a pass for 54 more yards. He goes into the San Jose game tied with Tom "Cowboy" McCormick, the Tigers' all-time great rusher, for yards gained. Each has reeled off 2,652, San Jose States needs a victory to close out its season on a 50-50 basis. "Cannon attended a breakfast in my honor, and was one of a num ber of those present I greeted and was photographed speaking with," Davis said Thursday night. Tallest Trojan SHA Mentor Greets 26 Casaba An eager turnout of 26 hopefuls, including three returning letter- men, greeted Sacred Heart Acad emy coach Jerry Kempf at the Trojans' initial basketball prac tice sessions last week. The trio of returnees, seniors Tony Krok, Bill Manning and Bob Andersch, are in Kompf's words, "the mainstays of a squad that should be just as strong as last year." Last season SHA posted a 5-won, 6-lost record in County B League action to rank fourth in league standings. "We are short," said Kempf,! "but the situation Is looking bet ter since we have a good-looking sophomore crop of prospects." Krok, who stands a well-built 6-ll2, is the lone Trojan extend ing over the six foot mark. Lost via the graduation route from last year's squad are Andre DeBcl, Tom Amber, Tom Pow-! ell, Mike Bramble and Larry Jackson. Another member of last year's team, George Hurley, wasj forced to the sidelines this sea son because of scholastic difficul ties. I William H. Sullivan Jr., sportsl promoter and Boston business man, announced Thursday that a franchise had been obtained for the city as the eighth club in the! newly formed American Football! League. J Though Sullivan confidently pre- dieted that "we'll open our sea-1 son next September," there still j remained the problem of finding a place to play. There are a number of suitable stadiums in the area but most of the owners have indicated no de sire to provide space for pro griddcrs. A team would need space for at least 25,000 fans while at home to break even. Sullivan gave no indication of how he intended to solve the sta dium problem but he appeared confident the team would have a place to play.
