(UPI) - The Stanford Indians devoted most of Tuesday's workout to setting up defenses for California s sput-T attack. The workout, held behind closed doors, brought about two lineup changes. Coach Jack Curtice said seniors John Thomas and Dick Bowers would replace center Doug Purcell and left halfback John Bond in the Bear game. BERKELEY, Calif. (UPI) -Three seniors moved up to first string berths Tuesday during a two-hour workout by the Califor nia Bars. Coach Pete Elliott said left halt back Grover Garvin replaced Syracuse, third in the East, topped Cincinnati 121-116 in the opener of the twinbill at New York's Madison Square Garden. The Nats are 4-2 against the West. A breakaway layup by Sam Jones won for the Celtics, who now have taken five straight and lead second place Philadelphia by two games in the Eastern race Jones and Bill Sharman, each scoring 28 points, kept Boston's string intact. Gene Shue was the game's leading scorer with 35 points. The Knicks scored their first home victory of the season as Kenny Sears' jump shot and Mike Farmer's drive-in broke up a 20 20 Hawk surge. Cliff Hagan of the Hawks was high with 27 points while Sears followed with 25, get ting 20 in the last half. Dolph Schayes and George Yardley triggered a Syracuse comeback after the Nats had blown a 10-point lead and trailed the Royals by nine. Schayes fin ished with 30 points. Jack Twy- man led scoring with 38 points, hitting half of the Royals' 20 first half field goals. New College Posts 1959 Cage Slate WEED The new College of the Siskiyous Eagles gets its initial taste of college basketball action when it travels- to Oregon Tech December 11 and 12 to battle the OTI Jayvees in a pair of non league games. The school, which opened its doors for the first time this fall, has a court squad numbering 16, reports coach John Mazzci. Included are Franklin B a r r, Dean Crechriou, Jim Cun ningham, Frank DeBortoli, Gary Dickerson, Richard Granstrom, Douglas Gordon, Henry Gonzales, Jim Heinke, Robert Jordan, Larry Lilja, Michael Lowry, James Nis wonger, Richard Ridgeway, Larry Wilson and Harold Yost. Mazzei reports that only nine games have been scheduled for the Eagles thus far but more will be added as the season progress es. The present College of the Sis kiyous' 1959-60 schedule is as fol lows: December 11 and 12, Oregon Tech Jayvees at Oregon Tech; De cember 19, Kingsley Field Jets at Weed; January 15 and 16, Lassen Junior College at Weed; January 22 and 23, Lassen Junior College at Susanville; January 29, Chico State Freshmen at Weed; Febru ary 5, Southern Oregon College Jayvees at Ashland; February 19, Kingsley Field Jets at kingsley; and February 20, Southern Ore gon College Jayvees at Weed. LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- If practice sessions are any indica- (ion, UCLA is going to concen trate heavily on an aerial attack asainst the Trojans Saturday in the Coliseum, with newly-rejuven ated tailback Bill Kilmer leading the way. Kilmer has looked good in Bruin drills this week and engaged in a lengthy passing drill Tuesday while coach Bill Barnes also had his team work on pass defense. Barnes suspects the Trojans will be passing more with Luther Hayes in the lineup replacing in jured George Van Vliet. LOS ANGELES (UPI) - Coach Don Clark of the undefeated Southern Cal Trojans is taking no chances on his team being baffled by UCLA's offense Saturday and is working his charges on de fending the single wing. Oregon State is the only single wing team SC has met this year. Willie Wood has looked sharp in passing drills, especially when teaming with end Luther Hayes. The result: The first Eastern team, other than a service acade my, to be rated the number one football team in the nation by United Press International. The man who combined the equipment and the attitude to pro duce the result: Ben Schwartz walder of Syracuse, today named as the UPI "Coach of the Week." The honor came after the cx- paratrooper's charges clobbered arch-rival and neighbor Colgate, 71-0 last Saturday. But the selec tion was as much a salute to the fact that Schwartzwalder had brought his undcfeled griddcrs to the number one rating and a Cotton Bowl berth. Schwartzwalder, in his 11th sea son at Syracuse after three years at Muhlenberg and several at various high schools, has no doubt that this club is the best he ever has coached. "In the past we've had some outstanding boys but we were never so strong right across the board," he said. The prize pupil of lire West Vir ginia grad (1933) to date has been Jim Brown, now the all-pro back at Cleveland. Brown was nearly a learn in himself and while it remained for this 1959 club to reach the top it was through his-efforts in 1954, 195 and 1956 that Syracuse came to be regarded as a- national power. County Quints Prep For Tournaments The changing over from football to basketball completed, all seven Klamath County B League schools have officially begun basketball practice in preparation for the up coming 1959-60 season. First on the agenda for all teams are the two county tournaments. The investigation is being con ducted by Atty. Gen. Louis J Lefkowitz to determine if any of the state's anti-monopoly rights were violated.' Lefkowitz particu larlyis anxious to find out if the radio-television-movie rights were properly distributed. In another phase of the investi gation, Dist, Atty. Frank Hogan said his office has taken legal ac tion in Miami, Fla., to require Anthony (Fat Tony) Salerno to testify before the grand jury. Salerno is the alleged "Mr. X' in the investigation. The Chiloquin tourney will pit Bly against Gilchrist and Chiloquin against Sacred Heart Academy in the Friday openers while the clas sic at Henley will pair Bonanza against Merrill and Malin against Henley. First games both nights begin at 7 o'clock while the second contests are slated to begin at 8:30. Once again, from all pre-season reports, Merrill, last year's league and county champions, appears to be in the driver's seat. However, strong competition from all other county teams is expected, espe cially Malin and Chiloquin. Both schools have almost the same teams returning and both appear well balanced and well stocked in height. The feared Huskies, who wrapped up last year's league crown with a 9-2 record and the county laurels with sweeping all three tournament tests, are under j the guidance of new coach AH Fairchild this year. Towering 6-5 Bruce Brickner leads the pack ofi Husky returnees. . Malin, also with a new coach,: Bob Graham, finished third in both league and county play last year! and should be a title threat this season with such returnees as Ran-1 dy Miller and Rick Illian.
