Arrangements for the games were to be made by the Oregon School Activities Assn. Monday. South Salem, ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press poll, became the fourth semifinalist Saturday night when it defeated fourth ranked Pendleton, 27-7, at Pen dleton. South Salem spotted Pendleton a first period touchdown on a one yard plunge by Jerry Cronin, then went on to win, getting two touchdowns each in the second and fourth periods. Defending state champion Jef ferson of Portland Friday night routed Sandy, 70-7. Medford edged Marshfield of Coos Bay, 13-6. Da vid Douglas of Portland beat St. Helens, 20-6. With the 225-pound Brown sty mied, the 180-pound Mitchell took over Sunday and scored three touchdowns as Cleveland over whelmed the Washington Redskins 31-17 for a 6-2 record. Mitchell, 23, who is in his second year as a pro, scored Cleveland's first TD by scampering 90 yards to pay dirt, then tacked on runs of 5 and 24 yards for additional tiillies as he amassed 232 on the ground. Mitchell, using rapier like thrusts to open the defenses where Brown's bulling rushes failed, av erased 16.6 yards a try to come within five yards of Brown's single-game NFL record for total yardage rushing. Cleveland next meets the Pitts- 'Big Daddy' Rolls MILWAUKEE, Wis. (UPI) Gene (Big Daddy) Lipscomb, 288- pound Baltimore Colt defensive tackle, rumbled 49 yards with an intercepted pass Sunday and then tabbed himself as one of his club's "offensive" weapons in its bid to retain the National Football League's Western Division crown. "With my running we can't lose," Big Daddy said. ip Cousins, man To 10 as the Cincinnati Hoyals are in the National Basketball Assn. The Celtics have beaten the Royals 11 straight times, includ ing a 134-128 triumph last night in Cincinnati. The big difference was Boston's work on Jack Twyman, who had been averaging nearly 40 points a game. Twyman finished with only 10 points,, two in the second half. In other games, the Minneapo lis Lakers defeated the Philadel phia Warriors, 106-100, and the Detroit Pistons whipped the New York Knickerbockers,. 103-94., Minneapolis' victory over the Warriors enabled the Lakers to climb out of the Western Division cellar. It was only the second de feat in 10 starts for Wilt (The Still) Chamberlain and his War riors. Chamberlain hit for 26 points, two below his season average. Paul Arizin also had 26, but the balanced scoring performance of the Lakers six of them in double figures clinched it. A national television audience watched the Pistons hand the Knicks their fifth straight defeat. Detroit never was behind. Gene Shue led the winners' attack with 26 points. Philadelphia, Philly Owner May Join AFL PHILADELPHIA (AP)- Phila dephia is expected to join the new American Football League under the banner of baseball magnate Bob Carpenter, but the clincher will not come today as had been expected. Carpenter, owner of the Na tional Baseball Leagues Phila delphia Phillies, had scheduled a news conference for late this morning to make known his deci sion on an invitation to become the eighth and final member of the new pro football circuit. But Carpenter Sunday night postponed the conference, saying he wanted a little more time to think things over. He said a new time for the conference will be set later this week. Carpenter, in first announcing the conference, strongly hinted he would say yes to the league. He added that he, like others in the circuit, was prepared to run a financial risk to get the league going. He asserted he was recon ciled to losing as much as $100,000 a year. If necessary, to get the Philadelphia franchise rolling. Other teams already in the AFL fold are New York, Los Angeles, Houston, . Dallas, Denver,' Buffalo and MinneapolivSt. Paul. Ray Blath of St. 'Louis won the 1959 ABC Masters bowling event with a 214 average for 24 games. In the Western Division, the San Francisco 49ers had their lead cut to one game wnen the Chicago Bears threw up a brilliant defense for a 14-3 victory. The second place Baltimore Colts edged Green Bay 28-24 on Johnny Unitas' three touchdown tosses. The 49ers 6-2 and Colts (5-3) defending NFL champions, clash at Baltimore next Sunday in a showdown contest. In other games Philadelphia knocked off the Chicago Cardinals 27-17 and Detroit upended Los An geles 23-17. Browns 31, 'Skins 17 Despite Mitchell's fancy foot work, it took a 35-yard field goal by Lou Groza at the start of the second half to put the Browns in front to stay. Dick James and Johnny Olszewski, who set a club record with 190 yards gained rush ing, gave Washington (3-S) a 14-14 halftime deadlock wilh scoring dashes of 4 and 19 yards, respec tively. Steelers 14, NY 9 Layne's second touchdown throw, 45 yards to Tom Tracy, ended New York's victory string at five games. The Giant offense, led by third-string quarterback Don Hcinnch due to injuries to Charlie Conerly and George Shaw, couldn't get going against a tough Steeler (3-4-1) defense. For the second week in succession, Pat Summerall accounted for all the Giant scoring with 21, 27 and 29 yard field goals. Bears 14, SF 3 The Bears (4-4) scored in the first period when Rick Casares capped a 48-yard drive with a yard plunge and that was all they need ed against the 49crs. Intercepting five passes, the Chicagoans held San Francisco touchdown-less for the first time this season as neith er Y. A. Tittle nor John Brodie had any success in the air. A 51- yard pass from Ed Brown to John ny Morris closed out the scoring Coifs 28, GB 24 Unitas' 24-yard heave to Jim Milscheller in the final period was the clincher for the Colts, who handed the Packers (3-5) their fifth consecutive defeat. Connect- for a touchdown pass in his 33rd straight game, Unitas hit Ray Berry twice on. 7 and 10-yard pitches. He has thrown 22 TD strikes this season. Jim Taylor scored three times for Green Bay to make it close, Eagles 27, Cards 17 Norm Van Brocklin kept the Eagles (5-3) Eastern title hopes alive by passing for two TDs and setting up the clincher, scored by Clarence Peaks on a yard plunge with five minutes remaining. Van Broekhn arched passes of 40 and 47 yards to Pete Retzlaff and Billy Barnes for scores. The loss dropped the Cardinals deeper into the cellar with a 2-6 mark. Lions 23, Rams 17 John Henry Johnson came out of the Detroit doghouse to oace the Lions (2-5-1) triumph over the Rams (2-6). After sitting out one-game suspension for an indif ferent attitude and failure to catch a plane, Johnson picked up 56 yards in 19 carries and scored once on an 11-yard pass from Earl Morrall. DIETZEL HEAD COACH Louisiana State University (Written For UPI) BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI) Comes graduation day. what a tragedy. I never thought I would be dreading a graduation day but I find that I am. It came a little closer to my attention when I as sembled all of our seniors for a group picture Sunday morning after our Mississippi State victory. It had not come to my mind that we have 19 "starters" who wilt be playing in their last "final game" for LSU (I probably didn't want to admit it). After you have coached a boy for four years, you get to know him pretty well. It's really sur prising how well you do get to know him. You get to know his parents and I've found myself wondering whether he will look like his dad looks in 20 more years. His girl friend will amaze you because she seems so young (yes, most of them have girl friends). The girl friends are generally prettier than you expected. It's really a good idea to get to know hs folks because it has a ten dency to remind you of the fact that his parents consider him the most precious thing on God's earth. It makes you realize your responsibility to him and ex plains the anxiety on his mother's face as she waits for him outside the dressing room door. Sometimes it may seem a little silly but then you remember Mom used to be the same way, Every coach at some time stops to reflect, I'm sure. This year, though, it is even more complicated because the Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia (Dec. 19) and the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston are in the mar ket for top teams. Add these to the Rose, Orange, Cotton, Sugar and Gator Bowls and you have confusion. As of now, only Syracuse, is down for a bowl game. The Orangemen, No. 1 team in The Associated Press poll, will play the winner of the Southwest Con ference championship in the Cot ton Bowl. One source told The Associated Press that the Bluebonnet Bowl has the inside track on Mississip pi along with the runncrup in the Southwest Conference. The same source also said that the Orange Bowl would dearly like to have Pe:m State, but that the Nitlany Lions, second only to Syracuse in the East, lean toward the Liberty Bowl because it's home state proposition. If Penn State turns down the Orange Bowl, Georgia almost cer tainly would wind up there. And what of Louisiana State, last year's national champion and practically forgotten merely be cause it lost one game by a single point? The word is that the Ben gals from the Bayou are interest ed in any good bowl assignment. Their task is complicated, how ever, because by state law they are not permitted to play against integrated teams. Actually, this has turned out to be a banner year for the bowl promoters. They have a whole fist ful of top teams available. Many year the pickin's arc so slim they have to go with teams that don't interest even the home folks. OSC Coach - Have Chance Against UO CORVALLIS (AP) "They're' a real outstanding team," Coach Tom Prothro said Sunday of Ore gon Slate's next opponent Ore gon. Asked about tho chances for victory in the traditional game, Prothro replied: "Well, I think there's always a chance." As for the prospects, he pointed out: "I think it's a little un reasonable to expect." He'll probably have the experts with him on that. Oregon is once- defeated by one point in nine games. Stale is 2-7. Against Washington, Oregon lost 13- 12 and Oregon State lost 13-6. Saturday State lost 39-22 to Stan ford, and Oregon beat them 28-27. Oregon Saturday edged Washing ton State 7-6 and WSU beat Slate 14- 0. Prothro said he plans to go be hind locked gates again this week to work out strategy for the Ore gon game-Saturday at Eugene. Arkansas has clinched a share of the title, but if Texas gets by weak Texas A&.M Thanksgiving Day, the Long- horns will finish in and will get tho a tie for first spot because they've been away from the Cot ton Bowl longer than Arkansas. Sugar Howl Chances are Louis iana State, just 80 miles away, will wind up there. LSU is a home team to Now Orleans and would be a popular choice. The other club could be Alabama, beaten only once although tied twice. Liberty Bnwl Penn State vs. Air Force Academy, a twire-beat-en team, but still a big drawing card.
