(AP)-A rec ord breaking white vole smoth- .ered the first all-out Negro politi cal campaign in the history ot this Mississippi River city of the Deep south. Russell B. Sugarmon Jr. a 30-year-old Negro lawyer, finished second in a race (or public works commissioner that had jittery segregationists predicting catas trophe. The final count gave Sugarmon S1.237 votes. He lost to a white I'nity Ticket" candidate, Wil liam W. Farris, by about 23,000 voles.' The predicted heavy vote for Negro candidates came as adver tised, but the uproar of the cam paign spurred the total turnout Thursday to a whopping 129,888. The previous record for a city election was 86,370. The Rev. Ben L. Hooks, a Ne gro lawyer and preacher who ranked as a possible victor in the i race for juvenile judge, lost by about 21.000 votes. He ran against three white candidates. Idle Talk About Inflation Scares Nation, Says Union FOILED BY PAINT NEW YORK (UPI) Bank Teller Mrs. Mary Downes fainted Thursday and therewith thwarted holdup. Mrs. Downes blacked out when a man handed her a note, saying he had a gun and demanding 13,000. .. - As she fell, she set off an alarm pong that sent the bandit on the run. He escaped, emptyhanded. FOREST PARK. Pa., (AP) - The AFL-CIO charged Friday that incessant scare talk about infla tion has frightened the nation out of several years normal economic growth and curbed job opportunities. A statement by the federation executive council said President Eisenhower's administration . and big business have been trying to "brainwash the country" into falsely believing it was about to be engulfed with calamitous inflation. George Meany, AFL-CIO presi dent, said inflation is a problem but by far not the only or most important problem. The chief one, he said, is what he called the economy's failure to grow and provide jobs at a rate keyed to the rapidly growing population and labor force. This inflation thing is just being overemphasized, Meany said. The AFL-CIO leaders wound up week-long meetings here Thurs day and released their statement on inflation today. It stated that industrial leaders are seeking to impose a freeze on wages and salaries, "piously pro claiming" this must be done to protect workers against inflation Actually, it said, there has been very little inflation for some time In the past decade, the statement said, it has amounted to less than 2 per cent a year, or well under the historical annual increase. The purpose of "the billion word brainwashing barrage" on Infla tionary dangers, the AFL CIO contended, is to curb needed pub lic . expenditures and prevent American workers from obtaining their fair share of productive pro fits in increased earnings. The statement added: "We must protest against the politically motivated hysteria which this administration and its big business allies have stigated. "These whipped up anti - Infla tion campaigns have not only scared America out of. years ot normal economic growth, but brought on repeated recessions in eluding the most recent one from which we have not fully recovered." Paint Might Catch Cone Ike Uses 12 Pens To Sign Hawaii Paper SWEET TREAT JERSEY CITY. N. J. (UPI) - Police arrested suspected lottery operator Harry Kohr, 43, as he tried to swallow the evidence Thursday. They said Kohr had written his bets on candy waters and was gulping down the evidence as they approached him. INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - A little paint may be all that's needed to give the Air Force a better chance of catching a para chuting satellite nose capsule. Data from the satellites Dis coverer V and VI indicates they got too cold for their power bat teries to operate, the Ballistic Missile Division said Friday. The batteries are supposed to start a radio homing device which would guide planes to the falling capsule. The planes would try to snag the capsule's parachute with a trapeze device. Missile division officials said the answer to proper temperature control may be in painting geo metric designs with light-absorb ing paint on the outside of the satellite. The paint would absorb the sun's rays and raise the satellite's temperature to a point at which the batteries would operate. ROCKET EXPLODES HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (UPI) - A rocket using an experimental 1 id propellant for fuel exploded on a test stand at Redstone Arsenal near here Wednesday, Ihe Army reported Thursday. The rocket was being tested for the Army's Nike-Zeus program. UNIDENTIFIED SNORES PISA, Italy (UPI) Dulia Bracaloni woke up her husband Thursday night and told him to stop snoring. The husband, Guido, woke up but the snoring continued. Beneath the bed, they found Sabino Giannelli, 24, asleep. He later told police he entered the house while the couple was oul then hid under the bed when he heard them returning and even tually fell asleep. WASHINGTON (AP) Hawaii, the jewel like chain of islands 2.400 miles west of the mainland. has brought the United States o( American to an even 50.. Using a dozen pens to sign his name, President tisenhower pro claimed its statehood Friday. It was the second time in less than a year that he performed such a historic duly Alaska became a state Jan. 3. As Hawaii followed Alaska into the union, the President also signed an executive order fixing Ihe design of the 50-star flag With a twinkle, he remarked that he's running out of ideas for flag designs. The new flag, which becomes official next July 4, has the same 13 red and while stripes. But its square field in the upper left cor ner has nine rows of stars, ar ranged in staggered fashion with six and five-star rows alternating "All 49 states will joirt in wel coming the new one Hawaii to tnis union," the President said more solemnly. "We will wish for her prosperity,' security, happi ness, and a growing closer rela tionship with all of the other CALHOUN'S T CLE A states. i We know that she Is ready to do her part to make this union stronger nation a stronger peo ple than it was before because of her presence as a full sister to the other 49 states. "So all of us say to her, Good luck." The president began signing the documents at 4:03 p.m. Washing ton time. The black and white plastic pens he used were distri buted to some of those present as souvenirs. The new flag, its silken folds shining, was unfurled. Edward Johnston, secretary of Hawaii, rushed to an open tele phone in the next room at the White House to give the news to Gov.-elect William F. Quinn, who was waiting in Honolulu's Iolani Palace. It was 10:16 a.m. Hawaii time. "Ladies and gentlemen," Quinn told the gathering in his office. "Hawaii is now a state." He then was sworn in as the state's first governor. People went about their busi ness on the palm-lined streets of Honolulu. There were no public celebrations. At the White House ceremony Sen.-elect Oren E. Long and Rep eieci Daniel i.
