Forty-three persons were killed In July auto accidents on Oregon's streets and highways, according to ' the Oregon Department ol Mo tor Vehicles. ' Twelve more victims joined the year's toll in the tirst five days of August, double the number -killed in that same period last ' year. This brings the total number of people killed this year on Ore pon s streets and highways to 238 This is 28 more than last year at (jus time. In July, 33 Oregonians and 10 visitors were killed. Last year 42 persons died in Oregon traffic ac cidents. July traffic deaths hit homes in . 23 different Oregon communities. At least 12 of the 43 fatally in ' Jured people were thrown from . their cars, as they were not wear ing safety seat belts. . Failure to drive and walk de fensively figured in many of the deaths last month. Some accident , causes were speeding, intoxication failure to yield the right-of-way nd darting into traffic. Curitao said he went to the woman Jor help but she refused Angered,, the man grabbed a ma thete and hacked the woman and three others in her house to death 75-Year-Old Californian Walks Across US 17 Times By RONNIE OWENS How many people can walk around the block wUhout becom ing winded? Not many but there is a 75-year-old man who can walk across the United States without losing a breath or a step. In fact, he has done it 17 times. He is Pat Thienes. the "Walk ing Man." He was here recently visitine Dr. C. W. Davis, chiro- oractic physician, who examined him for his 18th cross-country jaunt in September. On this trip he will travel from his home in San Diego to New York City. Upon arriving there he will appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. He expects to make his walk in a short enough period 'of time to re turn home by Christmas. Thienes has covered 265.000 miles in his lifetime, beginning "THE WALKING MAN," Pat Thienes. left, with Dr. C. W. Davis, before he begins his 18th walk across the United States in September. Thienes is the holder of 12 world records for walking speed and endurance, the last one of which he set on his 70th birthday. A career of over 35 years has seen him cover 265,000 miles. The shirt the traveler is wearing bears the name of one of the co-sponsors of his trip. STILL LEARNING AT 93 ATOKA, Okla. I At 93, John Mason has bought a new set of an encyclopedia" to increase his knowledge. from the moment he won his first walking contest in 1903 at age 17. He began his ground-covering sport to strengthen weakened mus cles, resulting from his having polio at the age of 6. He became interested in contests when he came under the auspices of Dan O'Leary, world champion walker. "My first cross-country walk was in 1905. I passed right through the town of Klamath Falls, but it wasn't much more than a few buildings." he stated when rem iniscing about the past. On this same first trip he had quite a memorable experience. After his arrival in San Francisco he stayed there until 1906. On the day of his departure he was just 12 miles outside of the city and the great earthquake hit. Sub Rescues Sailor In Sea NORFOLK, Va. (API Seaman Garguilo Francisco accidentally fell off his ship in the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday. Little over an hour later he was sort of acciden tally rescued. The Navy submarine rescue ship Kittiwakc, scurrying to port with an Injured diver, happened to spot Francisco bobbing in the water 43 miles off Cape Henry and took him aboard. He'd fallen overboard from the Rotterdam-bound Liberian collier White River and hadnt been missed. The Coast Guard said Francisco suffered no serious effects. one purpose to advertise for the .March of Dimes. He has raised thousands of dollars, all of which he has turned over to the society or to the many crippled children whom he has befriended. Stories of his contributions and the method used to raise money for this proj ect have appeared in most of the country's larger newspapers. I "I 1.1 k e to see everybody healthy," he replied when ques-i tioned as to his main reason fori walking, "and I feel I can by ad-! vertising in this manner. Also, I! want to give hope to all people; stricken with any crippling dis ease." Thienes is being sponsored on his forthcoming trip by the Gold en Spur Health Ranch and Chiro practic Hospital in Corona, Califor nia, where he has been doing his training, and by the Champion Food Supplement Company, for whom he will advertise by wear ing a monogrammed shirt. In his. lifetime he has set 12 i world records in speed and en durance. On his walks he makes approximately 40 miles a day (five miles an hour). His steady heel to toe pace allows him to walk with out getting tired. His last trip across the states was made in 69 days. On the traveler's 70th birthday he broke the world's record, which had stood for 75 years before, by walking 25 miles in three hours, 54 minutes and 20 seconds. The "Walking Man" laughed ai he told about his most unusual walk which consisted of pulling a man in a rickshaw from Los Angeles to Chicago for the Century of Progress celebration.
