Coroner James Corrigan said an autopsy revealed conditions "' "consistent with barbituric aid or barbiturate poisoning." But the coroner said the autop sy was inconclusive. A toxicologic cal report expected today should clear up the cause of death, he aid. X Crowley told police and held -to the story later in a man slaughter trial that lasted nearly -12 months that he had nothing to jL'.'do with Jones' death. . . He testified that the pair had .'g one out to sajuple the city's night life the night before, had J done some drinking, and returned to their hotel. What happened aft 5 er they got to the hotel was a blank in his memory, Crowley 5 naid. The prosecutors cited the husky ex-halfback's record as an ath letehe -starred on Yale football learns of 1930-31-32. They charged that the defendant quarreled with Jones and used his fists to beat him to leath. They asked that he be sentenced to four years at hard labor. Crowley's lawyers told the court's three judges that Jones probably caused his own death by falling about the room. , On June 22, the judges an nounced the evidence was not suf ficient to convict Crowley of hav ing inflicted the injuries thai caused Jones' death. Crowley and his wife, who had joined him in Tokyo, left by plane days later, despite the objections of the prosecutors. They said he was morally ohligateri to slay un til they could decide if they want ed to appeal the verdict. Two days aTter Crowley re turned to Hamden, with optimis tic " comments for newsmen who met him. the prosecutors an nounced they were dropping the case. He spoke of picking up where he had left off, of returning to his work with the T. A. D. Jones Co. and two other New Haven firms he headed. "I want to forget about iny ex perience in Japan," he said. "It's been a rough time." Early last week, a rumor lhat Crowley had quit his job as ex ecutive vice president of the Jones Co. was circulating in New Haven. On Friday, the company issued an announcement confirming this. It said he had severed his con nection with the company July 23 in order to look after his other business interests. Crowley was president of the New Haven Terminal and the Excello Corp, of New Haven, storage and ship ping companies'. Police said the last time Crow ley's family saw him was Friday. Survey Plans Refuels Here TROl'TDALE 'API - The Ore gon Highway Commission con ducted an aerial inspection of roads throughout the state Sun day. In a DC3 borrowed from Pacific Power and Light Co., the'eommis- sion flew nut of here Sunday morning and covered more than 1,3110 miles. The aerial trip took the com mission along the coast to the California border, over Klamath Falls and Burns, the Snake River, Hells Canyon, and Northeastern Oregon. The plane landed twice once at Klamath Falls to re-luel and once at Modford to pick up Com missioner Glenn Jackson. It was the first such tour ever made by the commission. And on the trip, the commission conduct ed its first meeting in the air, naming a representative to a leg islative committee. . Letters Toted 5,000 Miles Delivered 2 Months Late 15 miles of the Cape when the Thor-Able was fired. This was the first time an Air CAPE CANAVKRAly Kla. This is the story, as disclosed by the Air Force .Missile Test Cen ter Monday., The Thor-Able hurled ils nose cone lS.non miles an hour to an Atlantic target off Ascension Is land on .May 21. The cone con tained letters addressed to Maj lien. Donald N. ates. command er of the test center, and Col. Henry F. Warden, deputy com mander for tests. A recovery ship plucked the cone from the ocean and brought it to Cape Canaveral. The letters were not found, however, and of ficials thought they may have burned up in the intense re-entry heat encountered by the cone. A train carried the cone to Phil adelphia for study. Two weeks later technicians there found the letters crammed among the many telemetry instruments in the front if the cone. The undamaged mail was Mown back to the test center and placed or. the desk of U. Col. Thomas W. Morgan, Thor project officer, who sent them in the first place.
