WALZER UP1 Financial Editor - NEW YORK (UPD- Industrial ttocks furnished all the excite ment on the stock exchange dur ing the past week by setting new record highs in each of the five sessions. The industrial average closed on Friday at a level never Deiore attained, that was up 11.11! points on the week. It was up 31.28 points or 4.9 per cent for the month of July and up 91.23 points or 16 per cent from the close of 1958. It showed a gain of 327.18 points or 94 per cent from July 31, 1923 and was up 606.75 or 891 per cent from the close on Jan 2, 1900, the first market of the 20th century. ' Other sections of the list had minor gains this week. The rails closed at 167.80 up 0.11. Utilities 89.99 up 0.36 and the 65 stocks used in the three averages 223.49 up 2.44 points and a new record high. For the year so far the rails chow a gain of 10.15 points or 6 per cent while utilities show a loss of 1.01 points from the Dec. SI, 1958 close. The main sustaining force for the list was a batch of record high earnings reports for myriad companies, with emphasis on the iteels and oils. After Standard Oil (N.J.) re ported a 27 per cent rise in earn ings in the first half, a better de mand developed for the long lag gard oil section. This rise carried through several sessions and helped sustain the industrials whose average contains three of them. Steel shares responded to rec ord earnings of the biggest com psfiies reported during the week Beets Claim Second Victim IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) -The paralyzing poison in a jar of home-'tanned beets claimed its second victim Friday night. Of the four who survive, one is dear death, two are in serious condi tion and the last may be out of danger. All six were felled by dreaded botulism a nerve-attacking poi on produced by bacteria which grow in improperly cooked food. A doctor here calls it one of the most deadly poison substances known to man. Fifteen-year-old Wanda Nelson died in her iron lung Friday eve ning. Early Thursday, Aaron Gru well, 74, a east Idaho farmer, also died. Do Unto Others, Driver Learns BEAUMONT, Tex. (AP) - "Hey! Why don't you get yourself a driver's license?" an irate mo-: torist yelled at G. H. Mitchell whose moderate pace angered the other driver. Mitchell, a policeman, had driver's license. He stopped the other car, identified himself, and Inquired about the angry man's license. He didn t have one. "Oullty," the man told Corpora Uon Court Judge Lloyd Walker. "That will be WO fine and $5.20 eourt costs,H Walker replied. like his car. The motor swim it into the dock!" U. S. Steel and Bethlehem Chemicals were strong spots in several sessions. Their earnings as a group rose 75 per cent for the second quarter compared with asyear ago, a Dow-Jones survey showed. That tabulation showed many other brilliant gains 523 per cent for textiles, 300 per cent for autos ana equipments, 163 per cent for all steels, 149 per cent for railroaads, 103 per cent for rail equipments, and 27 per cent for oils. A group of 428 compan ies of many lines had a gain for the second quarter of 76 per cent over the second quarter of 1958 The poorest showing was in aircrafts which declined 61 per cent. When that bad news was out of the way the group moved higher. Food products showed a rise of less than half of one per cent. Airlines were up less than 5 per cent. Chain stores and util ities rose 8 per cent or so. Business news continued to re flect the impact of the steel strike. Steel operations fell to less than 13 per cent of capacity. Car loadings were hit by a drop in ore loadings. Auto output held high but is expected to decline next week as companues begin tooling for new models. Retail trade held high. Oil inventories improved as vacation driving was stepped up. The market appeared to ignore strike news on the theory indus try would catch up with post poned operations once steel workers returned to their jobs. There was little or no progress reported in steel wage negotia tions and experts expected the strike to carry much further. Sales for the week ' totaled 15,069,048 shares, a daily average of 3,013,809 shares daily. This compared with 14,785,280 shares or a daily average of 2,957,056 in the previous week. Sales for July totaled 70,889,423 shares, against 64,351,128 shares in June and the best 'July figure since 1933. Sales this week crossed the half billion mark for the year and at the end of July showed a total to date of 513,593,162 shares, most for the period since 1930 when the July 31 total stood at 541,010,560 shares. Bonds again showed a firmer tone with the Dow-Jones average for 40 representative issues 10 high grade rails, 10 second grade rails, 10 utilities and 10 indus trialsat 83.37 up 0.11 points, Income rail bonds rose 0.64 point to 70.90. , The week's sensation in the whole market was Du Pont which soared to a new high and closed the week with a net gain of lBVi points. Belief that a way will be found to divest it of its General Motors stock favorably for stock holders apparently was the only news for this rise. Oils made the best group show ing with gains ranging to more than 8 points in Amerada. Alu minums, the weak features, reg istered losses running to 6c points in Reynolds Metals. Merck lost t in the drugs. Thoaccos rose on high earnings. Corning Glass netted I points in its sec tion. Chrysler lost 2 and Ford gained l' in the motors. A purchase by the company of 240,768 shares of American Broadcasting Paramount in one block Thursday lifted that issue to top place in volume. Royal Dutch and Jersey Standard came next to reflect oil activity.
