policeman went berserk in a hos
pital Monday night, seized a
woman patient as a hostage and
fired several shots in a corridor
before he was killed by a fellow
officer.
County Coroner Ralph Steed
said Ralph E. Medlin, 26. a police
man at nearby Southern Pines,
was shot by Rudolph Drye, also
of the Southern Pines police force.
The coroner said Drye answered
a call from Moore County Hospital
when Medlin began to create a
disturbance.
Steed said the incident occurred
outside the room of Dorothy Clip-
pard. Hr said it was not clear
why Medlin. who was off duty,
