NEW YORK I ITU Here's an
addition In things vou can't
dodge, such as death and taxes
the telephone.
Vou may think you've ducked
Alexander Graham Bell when
you're walking along 42nd Street
but wasn't that your wrist phone
that just rang?
You answer it and lie gently
that it's a wrong number only to
have the guy on the other end
say:
"You can't Inol me. Bill. You
don't look a day older on my
visual screen here. Let's talk
oer some business."
So here you are face to face
with old Pete in Waikiki who
wants to know what's happened
lo that order of googols you
promised lo deliver by the lfith
And Pete s talking from a street
corner, loo.
Take it from Frederick R. Kap
pel, president of American Tele
phone & Telegraph Company.
tiiese are just such things not far
ahead in the telephone industry
street corner. New York, to
street corner, Waikiki, tele
phone conversations, wrist watch
phones, see Uie person you're
talking lo and being seen by
him to mention I few.
Kappel writes about communi
cations to come in the current
"Telephone Engineer & Manage
ment" magazine which is just
celebrating its 50th birthday with
a big fat edition that projects the
Inline right straight into the 21st
century.
Here is what Kappel sees in
the future:
Automatic dialers, pushbutton
calling, pushbutton selection of
particular telephone, smaller tel
ephone instruments, hand-dee
instiumcnts, concealed instru
ments using stereophonies, usins
iclephones from every room, tel
ephone from every corner, tele
phone from automobiles and oth
er moving vehicles, and phoning
front vour vest norket or wrist I
Dialing across the ocean is im
minent, says Kappel. Also
there'll be dala phoning, such
things as tickers to the ball game
or theater over the telephone.
You'll soon be able to talk to
our manned satellites in space if
the lines aren't busy.
"There is no doubt," says Kap
pel, "that a new communication
will not only make our services
more versatile, hut should en-
abie us to obtain much improved
reliability.
Kappel projects the population
ahead to get his predictions into
perspective.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -Soviet
Premier Nikita Khrushchev
today called off the visits to Scan
' dinavian countries he had been
planning for August,
The Swedish, Danish and Fin
nish governments made almost
simultaneous announcements of
Khrushchev's abrupt change of
plans.
The Finnish government said it
, had been informed in Moscow this
morning that "Khrushchev's visit
lo Denmark, Norway and Sweden
had been postponed. As he is not
..visiting Scandinavia, he will have
no opportunity this time lo visit
X Finland."
The Soviet foreign ministry, in
1. a note to Sweden, said the visit
to Stockholm was called off he
Jcause of "an anti-Soviet cam
s' paign" by the Swedish press and
.'fertain political leaders.
:: Many Swedish newspapers have
been urging the government to
-call off the Khrushchev tour. Op
" position parties, including the Lib
" erals . and Conservatives, have
, been arranging protest meetings.
The Norwegian labor govern-i-ment
newspaper Arbeiderbladet
also warned today that "reaction-
.. aries were threatening disturb-
ances in Oslo during Khrushchev's
..visit and said no action would be
taken against them.
Khrushchev had been expected
to arrive in Stockholm harbor with
his wife and two daughters on the
Soviet cruiser Sverdlovsk Aug. 15
Only last Friday Khrushchev
made a tough speech about Scan
dinavia at Szczecin, Poland. He
charged that aggressive Western
circles wanted to set up rocket
bases in Scandinavia to draw So
viet nuclear retaliation away from
themselves. Norway and Denmark
are members of Ihe North Atlantic
Alliance.
