Griggs, after yielding the two bagger to Holmes in the first stanza, settled down the rest of the game, picking up six strike outs while giving up only three bases on balls. His tcammales, garnering six safeties over the seven inning route, picked up single tallies in the first, second, filth and seventh in nings to hand the Grants Passers the whitewash job, Griggs sixth victory of the season. The only time that Griggs was in any real trouble was in the opening innings, when shortstop Denny Walker was safe on first baseman's Don Gresdel's error, followed by Holmes' double, which sent Walker to third. However, Griggs retired the next two bat ters in quick fashion to end the threat. Klamath's Initial marker of the game in the first came off a walk to Don Willey, a single by Dave Saks, a hit batsman and another single by Bob Yunck. Steve Binney led off the second with a single and was followed by Estin Kiger's sacrifice, a walk to Gary Head and a squeeze bunt by Willey which plated Binney. The third KF tally in the fifth innings resulted when Saks led off as he was safe on Holmes' error at second base. Two free passes from GP hurler Bill Cole and Bin ney 's being hit by a Cole pitch scored Saks. In the top of the seventh, Yunck was safe on Larry Janssen's mis- cue at third base and scored after walks to Binney and Kiger's groundout to second. Pitcher Bob Moore went all the way in hurling the victory for Hal's, picking up nine strikeouts and yielding three walks, while teammates Tim Bailey and Tom Schiff pitched in with some lusty hitting. Bailey rapped a home run and a pair of singles in three trips while Schiff connected for a trio of singles in four trips to lead the winner s nine-hit attack against three P-M hurlers. George Sprague added a two-bagger to Hals attack while Willie Jones led the losers' attack, which included no extra-base hits, with a pair of one-baggers. The winning Bend-Portland nine poled out a total of 22 base hits, which included five extra base blows, as they tallied all their runs in the first and sixth in nmgs. The winners tallied nine markers in the initial stanza and 12 more in the final inning which proved more than enough. Larry Cassidy, Kim Coon and Jim Patzke; who got credit for the win, each took turns on the mound against Car-Ad-Co while the losers used only two twirlers, Richard Laurhammer and Terry Ash. Ash was charged with the loss. Coon's pair of doubles led the winners at the plate while Bob Moss and Cassidy added doubles and Gary Mayfield a three-bagger, Lester Thurman, Terry Rogers and Don Mustoe all collected two baggers for the losers. TU 4-4154 Souchak Victor In Open PITTSBURGH (AP) - Shed pounds and save strokes says golfer Mike Souchak. The 1-pound hard hitter from Grossinger, N.Y., says the fact that he has trimmed off 20 pounds in recent weeks was a big factor in his Western Open champion ship. He won it Sunday by a single pressure-packed putt on the eight eenth green on the Pittsburgh Field Club. Picking up the $5,000 check made the careful dieting well worth while, he observed. Actually, the difference between winner and runnerup was more easily measured in inches. Souchak putted accurately from four feet on the final green for a brilliant 65, five shots under par, a 72-hole total of 272. His closest rival, Arnold Palm er of Ligonier, Pa., missed his putt from two feet and had to set tle for a shaky 71 round that wiped out his lead at 54 holes and left him all alone in second place with 273 strokes. The difference amounted to $2,500. Palmer got just half as much as Souchak. The duel of the two fairway stars was a dramatic climax to a par shattering tournament which was, surprisingly, a substantial failure at the box office. The course records were set at the Field Club, first at 65 and Friday at 63 strokes, the latter by Dutch Harrison, of St. Louis. Souchak and Palmer played to gether Sunday with Palmer hold ing a 5-shot edge at the first tee. Souchak caught up at the eleventh, then they matched stroke for stroke with a birdie and five pars to the 220-yard uphill eighteenth. Third money of $2,000 went to big George Bayer, from Lemont, III., who finished with 274, six under par and a stroke better than Ted Kroll, Sarasota, Fla., who won $1,500. Moose's Back Worries Case BOSTON (AP) Moose Skow ron's aching back has Manager Casey Stengel fretting about a longtime Yankee stronghold first base. Skowron was returned to New York for treatment of his recur ring ailment Sunday while the world champions took a fourth straight drubbing, 7-3, from the aroused Boston Red Sox. Muscular but brittle,. Skowron couldn't have been sidelined at a more critical time from the Yan kees' viewpoint. The club has lost five of its last six starts, has fall en below .500 again and is cling ing to the first division by a mere half game. "He's gonna be missed bad," Stengel said. "He's only our lead ing rbi man (59) and been hit ting around .300. There's no tell ing how long he'll be out. It don't look very good for our side." Stengel hinted he might try Norm Siebern or Elston Howard at first in place of the weak hitting Marv Throneberry. But Casey needs Howard to share the catching chores with Yogi Berra and Elston has been Casey's best looking left fielder here.
