Summer Camp Epistles With Misplaced Clauses Confusing To Parents . By HUGH A. MULLIGAN Associated Press Writer Any day now those cryptic com muniques will begin arriving from the poison ivy front, and parents all over the land will set about deciphering them with an air of shrieking desperation. The first will be simple enough on the face of it anyway. ' Just a mimeographed postcard announcing that little Wcnccslas has arrived safely at Camp Zumi Nawitana, has been assigned to Tepee B, Tribe 8, and is fast mak ing fine new friends. .That doesn't sound like Wcnccs las at all. Other kids usually hate him on sight. But 'sure enough, duly attested by a thumb print in mustard, a popcorn smudge, a dab of calcified ice cream and a dis orderly array of X's denoting unbounded filial affection. But why didn't ho write his own postcard? Has he broken his arm again already? Or gone Into an other okhis sulks and refused to write? - Mother, of course, doesn't know that the cards were handed out, Signed and handed back, under impetus of free ice cream for all, long before the bus reached camp. She's all for calling the camp director or the state police or the McClellan committee right away, but father advises a policy of watchful waiting. So the grim wait begins. One, two, three days go by. Mother writing twice a day now, begins to look wan and haggard, like a cross between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Whistler's mother. Father maintains an outward calm but keeps ducking out to the refrigerator and making little squishing noises with a can open er. Finally, on the morning of the fourth day, the impenetrable wil derness yields a message. Not a message really but a brown card board box with a strap around It. Laundry. Wenccslas' laundry. . v The frantic parents fall to ex amining it like detectives at the scene of an ax murder. Every stain, every smudge, every rip has a tender meaning. They know right off that he is sunburned (grease stains on .T-shirt), has made at least one friend (that's not his sweater) and one or more enemies (dungarees tied in SO knots), is eating and obviously en joying eggs, baked beans, spa ghetti and Jclln (wouldn't touch them at home) and has been in cither a fight, a mine cave-in or an Indian massacre. His crumpled postcard next day provides no further clue. "Dear mommy and daddy," It reads. "The food stinks. My pal Freddie throw fits. Send two dol lars because Uncle Bill wants to burn my initial in my back (or It it bunk? book?) at the camp fire Friday night." A hysterical phone call 'to the camp director reveals that the menus are prepnrcd by an expert dietician, that Freddie only acts like he is throwing lits in imita tion of a TV comedian and that the two dollars will instruct Wen ccslas In the rudiments of burn ing designs on birch bark. The crisis is hardly past when another nerve bomb erupls in the mailbox. This time a whole letter recounting the adventures of Wen ceslas on his first overnight hike. By the end of the second week, mom and dad have learned to live with their offspring's literary pe culiarities, but ' ' last letter sends them winging up to Camp Zumi Nawitana. "Dear mommy and daddy, "The food in the infirmary stinks. Plcasb make a big cage for Herman. He eats mice and lizards and hangs by his claws up side down. Lastnight we-stole Uncle Bill's gin (gum? gun? gig?) and had loads of fun. They buried Freddie down by the beach. Can I stay another two weeks?
