The Dunsmuir Merchants Pads, Bees Split Pair In San Diego SAN DIEGO (AP) The San Diego Padres belted Salt Lake City 9-3 Saturday night after the Bees took the opener of a day night Coast League doubleheader 4-1. '. The Padres moved from sixth place into a , tie for fourth with the night game victory. Dick Smith and Allen Jones homered for San Diego in the sec end game. Hal Pritchard's home run was one of only six hits al lowed by Dick Stigman, who picked up his fourth victory for the Padres in 14 decisions. Ernie Francis pitched a four- hitter for the Bees in the after noon game and was supported by homers by Chuck Harmon and R. C. Stevens. It was Francis' first complete game this year for the Bees. Becker Named Mentor At PSC PORTLAND (AP)-Chuck, Bcck- er. a 135-pound center for the chool in the early 1950s, Saturday was appointed an assistant foot- ball ' coach at Portland State College. Becker, was received a master's degree from the University of Oregon in 1957, coached earlier at Springfield High School. Vegley (1-1) has worked 15 innings since reporting to the Kubs and has given up 14 hits, seven rims while striking out 14 and walking nine. In his most recent appearance Vegley experi enced a little difficulty, getting the credit for a 14-12 loss to the Mount Shasta Seals, after coming into the game as relief for starter Bob Lawery in the second stanza. He struckout five Seals over two innings before losing the range and issuing four walks and then tried to ride out a Mount Shasta bat at tack that finally resulted in 10 runs in four innings. (AP) Miler Jim Grelle of Oregon and shot- putter uanas Long oi aoumcrn California upset the national AAU champions here Saturday in the Oregon AAU track meet. Long, a USC freshman, beat world record-holder Parry O Bri en, Los Angeles, for only the sec ond time with a toss of 62 feet, H inches. ' Grelle, the NCAA champion and AAU runnerup in the metric mile, whipped Oregon freshman and AAU 1,500-meter champion Dyrol Burleson by five yards in the Ore gon mile. Grelle's time was 4:06.7, well off his best mark. O'Brien's best toss for "second place was 62 feet, 2'i inches. O'Brien's world record is 63 feet, 2 inches, although Long has done 63 feet, 7 Inches. That record was not recognized because it was on his seventh try in a meet. That is one more than allowed. In the mile both Burleson and ft P ed to Mike Dolan in the eighth. The 'balance of the Kub roster will find Bob Kelly behind the plate, IrV Whitt on first, Butch Kimpton on, second, Ron Owings at shortstop, and Dean Dunson at third while Floyd Linderman, Mike Dolan and Rube Johnson will handle the outfield assignments. The Yreka lineup will include, as pitcher, either little Fred Rick or Mike Branham, Lee Temple ton on first, Gary Trinca at sec ond, Ted Peters at third, Gary O'Brien, catching, and outfield ers Tom Bice, JoJo George and Duane Culp. In the first meeting between the two squads, the season opener, the young Yrekans got away with a 6-3 victory off a 10 strikeout, eight hit pitching job turned in by Rick. Bob Lawery was handed the receipt for the loss. Solons Boost League Lead With Victory SACRAMENTO (AP) The Sacramento Solons boosted their Pacific Coast League lead to three games with a tense 3-2 vic tory over the Phoenix Giants Sat urday night. A July 4 crowd of 5,062 watched Winston Salem Brown gain his eighth triumph against nine de feats. The loser was Joe Shipley, re cently of the parent San Francis co Giants. He proved to be as wild as advertised. His successor, young Marcelino Soils, allowed only hit in seven and two thirds innings, struck out eight and walked only two. Sacramento scored all its runs off Shipley in the first inning. Joe walked three, hit another batter and added two wild pitches. A third AAU champion, Bill Del linger, formerly of Oregon and Saturday running for the Air Force, won the two mile by beat ing Lazlo Taborl of the Santa Clara Youth Center in 8:58.4. AP- Fred Schaus, West Virginia Uni versity basketball coach, Satur day rejected an offer to become head coach at the University of Washington. Montanan Replaces Leader GRANGEVILLE MP) Billy Schall of Arlee, Mont., overtook Clint Roberts of Lewiston, Idaho, in Saddle bronc riding Saturday before a cheering crowd of 3000 in the Grangeville Border Days rodeo arena. The Montana cowboy won day money in that event,' followed by Roberts. Friday, when the rodeo began, Roberts and Schall finished in 1-2 order in the first go-round of the saddle bronc competition. The cowboys will make their final rides in this and other events when the rodeo concludes Sunday. The all-around cowboy also will be named Sunday. A capacity crowd jammed the stands for Saturday's action, which unfolded under sunny skies and in shirt-sleeve weather. Thousands lined the streets for the annual Border Days parade. Johnny Reynolds of Whitehall Mont., took third in saddle bronc riding. Fourth place in that event went unfilled because one of the entrants Jim Case of Davenport, Wash., fell from his mount. He will be permitted to try again Sun day. Case lost his wind but was not seriously hurt. It was Drysdale s first victory in Wrigley Field after three j straight losses here in Iour sea" sons. Drysdale scattered five hits to bag his ninth win. He fanned 11 and walked only one. In the opener Cub pitcher Boh Anderson yielded six hits in win ning over rookie Larry Sherry who was making his first major league start. The 34-year-old coach had been considering the Washington offer since visiting Seattle last week. The Seattle Times said it was told by Schaus he felt a moral obligation to remain at West Vir ginia to avoid breaking faith with the boys whom he recruited for the Mountaineers. Schaus was the second big-name coach to decline an offer to re place Tippy Dye as head coach at Washingtort. California's Pete NeWell turned - down tUe chance June 23. In Seattle, Washington Athletic Director George Briggs expressed disappointment at Schaus' deci sion but said he "was only one of several ' leading coaches being considered." "I feel the vacancy will be filled within a week." Newell and Schaus had the 1-2 collegiate teams in the nation last season. The California Bears won the NCAA championship with 71-70 victory over Schaus' West Virginia Mountaineers. The Washington basketball coaching job has been vacant since Dye resigned June 8 to become athletic director at the University of Wichita. Seattle Nabs 10th Straight Over Indians SEATTLE (AP) - The tail-end Seattle Rainiers won their 10th straight Pacific Coast League series opener Saturday as young Dave Stenhouse cooled off the Spokane Indians 5-1, on a five- hitter. Stenhouse was never in trouble in winning his fifth game of the season against six losses. Spokane went ahead in the top of the third when Bob Gilliam' bardo, the starting pitcher, sin gled to center, went to third on Tom Davis sharp shot to right and scampered home on an in field forceout. The Rainiers went ahead to stay in their half of the third on Paul Pettit's Uvo-run double to center after Bobby Adams had walked and Lou Skizas singled. Seattle counted again in the sev enth on Harry Malmberg's single with a man on second, and got two more in" the eighth as frosting on the cake. A slim crowd of 2,051 turned out for the July 4 single game, played in the fast time of 2 hours and 10 minutes. The 19-year-old Sao Paulo girl served and volleyed at a killing pace while covering the court with Graffs Hit Wins Game For Portland PORTLAND (AP)-Milt Graff singled home Anthony Tornay with the winning run in the 12th inning as the Portland Beavers edged the Vancouver Mounties 5-4 in a Pacific Coast League base ball game here Saturday. Graff's line single over second base came with the bases loaded. Tornay, who dashed home on the hit from third, had got on base on a fielder's choice. He went to third on Charley Secrest's single. Clem Moore came up next and hit an infield grounder to force to Secrest at second. A walk to pinch-hitter Len Neal filled the bases. Vancouver had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh in ning. Solo home runs by Moore and George Freese helped close the gap. In the ninth, Freese singled home Graff with the run that knotted the score at 4-4. It was a free-hitting game. Van couver got 16, Portland 15.
