Game time is 2 p.m. The holiday weekend test finds the Kubs, one game down to the Yrekans already this year, facing a pitching assortment that prom ises a real challenge to Kub bat ling power. Klamath Falls hitters, although they fell off at Camp White Wed nesday, getting only three hits, are working atop a .268 overall team average. Individually the KF nine is led by pitcher Griggs who is rapping the ball at a .420 clip. In four games pitcher Gary Bebber has a .400 mark while the next regular, Dave Saks, boasts a ..388. Riding the fourth spot, the only other K. Falls player over .300, Is outfielder Don Willey, who is averaging .340. Bill Virdon's bunt single loaded the bases and Dick Groat broke it up with a single. Warren Spahn started for the Braves and allowed only three hits in his seven innings, yet trailed 3-1. Two walks, errors by Man tilla and O'Brien and singles by Kamon mejias and winning pitcher Vcrn Law gave the Pirates three runs in the second. Bums 4, Cardinals 0 Southpaw Danny McDevitt (8-S) won his fifth in a row for the Dodgers and gained his second shutout although tagged for 10 hits, all singles. The Dodgers made four double plays. Rookie Dick Ricketls (1-41 lost it, giving up consecutive triples by Junior Gilliam and Charlie Ncal in the third. Cubs 10, Giants 4 Ernie Banks' 21st homer was good for three Cub runs arid Al Dark and Dale Long each hit two- run homers. Glen Hobbie (9-7) won it. Phils 7-4, Cincy 6-8 Newcombe (9-4) beat the Phils with a six-hitter, and homered for the clincher in the sjxth. Gus Bell drove in four Red runs with a homer and a double. Machen, Vargas Set PORTLAND (AP) Eddie Machen and Reuben Vargas will meet here July 22 in a 10-round re-match of their earlier bout this year in San Francisco, pro moter Tommy Moyer said Thurs day. Machen, ranked sixth among the world's heavyweights by the National Boxing Assn., won a de cision in the earlier fight. Vargas, a San .Francisco fight er, is unranked. Promoter Moyer said the fight will be televised nationally, with Portland and a 200-mile surround ing area blacked out. Hardtops To Roll Saturday An added force of California drivers takes the track this Satur day evening when the weekly hardtOD races get underway at the Eberlein Street speedway. The closure of two Northern California race tracks benefits local fans as 15 drivers from as far south as Chico have made their intentions known to appear on the local card Saturday. Earl Sheridan, local promoter, reports that another five or six are also expected to show up for Saturday's program. The eight-event program will get underway with the time trials be ginning at 7 p.m. followed by the trophy dashes at 8 o'clock. In spite of crackups and motor trouble last weekend, three local drivers Dale Hankins, Spinner Smith and Johnny Jones, are ex pected to return to the track ready to go this weekend. Bud Cook, 1857-58 champion, and Kenny Kimes from Paisley, last week's winners at the local track are leading the pack so far this season with a number of victories The races should be spiced with a bit more action this weekend, as last week, the Kl'amath Rac ing Association lifted the ban on "big" engines, marking the ap pearanccs of the speedy, full-race California equipment. 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 for the Wimbledon championship. Maxwell Big Man In Success By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Detroit's injured Tigers have hobbled back into third place, just two , games short of the American lague lead. Pitcher Jim Bunning hopes to come back today. Yet they ve won three in a row and four of their last five and Maxwell's been the big man in all four successes. Thursday night he scored twice and beat the second-place Chica go White Sox 9-7 with his 18th homer a grand-slam in the eighth inning. That left first-place Cleveland with a one-game lead despite a 6-4 defeat at Kansas City. But De troit closed in as Baltimore took fourth place by skidding New York from third to fifth, beating the Yankees 3-1. Tigers 9, Chi Sox 7 Maxwell's homer, off reliever Turk Lown, gave the Tigers a 9-2 lead that was just enough. The White Sox chased winner Don Mossi (7-3) in a five-run ninth triggered by Al Smith's grand slam. Bob Shaw (6-3) lost It. Athletics 6, Indians 4 One of four Cleveland errors gave the A's the clincher in a two run fifth when Bill Tuttle hit an RBI triple and scored himself on I Jim Baxes' relay error. Orioles 3, Yankees 1 The Orioles beat Don Larsen (6-3) for the. first time in 12 deci sions since September 5, 1955, al though they managed only five hits. They scored all their runs on three hits in the first two in nings. Bob Nieman followed Gene Woodling's two-out single with his ninth home run in the first, and winning pitcher Jerry Walker (6-3) drove the other with a two-out bloop single in the second.
