The mystery sub was reported running submerged at four knots and on a westerly course, headed toward the coast. The task force commander said contact was maintained for 30 minutes through sonar under water sound-echo equipment. "The naval general staff de cided that the task force should attack the possible submarine should it not identify Itself through sonar . . , ( but) the sus pected target was not attacked for iack of opportunity," the com munique said.
