Wednesday, July 1, 1959 Fragrance News ' The fragrance news of summer, It's nice to know, includes refresh ing, delicious scents ranging from those with a noble background ol over 0 years, to those as mod era and sophisticated as the last cable from Paris, all by Harriet Hubbard Aycr. In the former category are fragrances Identified with Mrs. Ayer from the "Age of Inno cence," when she was pioneering In the beauty field at the turn of the century. It is hard to realize now what courage it took to com pete with the perfumes of Paris when she originated "Honeysuck le," a nostalgic, honey-sweet odor that will bring a sigh of rcmem brance to many a grandmother of today, but also has a definite ap peal to young moderns. It sug gests the vine-hung porches of Old New England on a drowsy " summer afternoon when bumble bees were buzzing in the honey suckle blossoms and Stutz Bear cat waited at the gate. Ah, ro mance! Another long-loved fragrance of that era is "Pink Clover," a clean, fresh, charming scent of blossom ing clover under a hot June sun. It is said that Mrs. Aycr was en chanted by discovering such a field during her girlhood in the mid West, and resolved to capture its 'charm. Whether or not she found a four-leaved clover on that occa sion, the perfume brought her good luck. . In strong contrast to these fra grances is "Golden Chance," mod ern, sophisticated and high-keyed. Its. elegance is admired on four continents and it is one of the gold en high-notes in the modern sym phony of perfumes that combine rare floral essences with aphro disiac elements, to achieve an ex otic "bouquet." Some of the most important components of this type of fragrance come from such dif ficult areas as the high plateaux of Tibet, the hazardous depths of Africa, the jungles of South Amer ica. To achieve a fragrance such as "Golden Chance" is not a mere natter of picking a bunch of flow ers. Danger goes into its creation and is somehow conveyed by its beauty. Another very smart and subtle fragrance is "Woodsy," one of the ' . modem Harriet Hubbard Ayer tri umphs, well named because it gives the impression of wild flow ers, ferns, deep forest fragrances (' and a haunting, hard-to-define, top note suggesting strange fruit, green moss, bird-songs and a hidden, ailent pool. These two smart fragrances In volve rare ingredients ranging from the Himalayas to the tropics, yet they are within the reach of every woman in the modern, han dy, Ayermist packaging. Both are trictly modern, very high-style, extremely appealing, yet complete ly distinctive. "Golden Chance" is packed in a black and gold Ayermist bottle, "Woodsy" in appropirate green, but the famous "Honeysuckle" and "Pink Clover" come in their tradi tional packaging of gold and pink respectively. When the last two made their debut as sensational "made in America" perfume, mod ern bath luxuries were unknown, but now the colognes have match ing Bubbling Bath Oil and Dusting Powder and Mrs. Ayer, a push ever for luxurious bathing, would have loved them. . ICE CREAM Treat the family tonight to'home- made ice cream. This delicious "Golden Fruit Ice Cream" smooth and rich with a wonderful and fine color canned fruit cock tail. In this recipe, canned fruit cocktail is sieved or pureed in an electric blender before combining with the other ingredients. For an exceptionally colorful and delicious dessert, you might serve scoops of this ice cream in sherbet dishes with a topping of chilled well drained canned fruit cocktail. Looks festive and tastes wonderful! GOLDEN FRUIT ICE CREAM 1 (No. 2 '.2) can fruit cocktail 3 tablespoons honey Vt teaspoon xult U teaspoon finely grated or , ange rind Hi tablespoons brandy 1 cup whipping cream Drain fruit cocktail, saving syr up. Blend fruit cocktail until smooth in electric blender. Meas ure; if necessary add enough syrup from fruit cocktail to make two cups. Stir in all remaining ingre dients and turn into freezing tray. Freeze until nearly firm: turn into chilled bowl and beat until smooth with electric mixer or rotary beat er. Return to freezing tray and freeze until firm. Makes about 1 quart.
