Group Given New Engine LOS ANGELES (UPI) - The first of the 75,000-pound thrust rocket engines for America's pro gram to shoot a man into space has been delivered to the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Hunts ville, Ala. A spokesman for Rocketdyne Di vision of North American Aviation said Monday that a Redstone li quid propellant engine was in the hands of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration scien tists for use in Project Mercury. Deliverj' ef the Redstone could mean that the first short flights of animals and the seven astronauts now training for being blasted in to an earth orbit might get un derway within the next several months. . The program announced earlier by NASA for Project Mercury in cluded sending the astronauts on flights of about 130 miles aboard Redstone-boosted, capsules. (AP) - Italian Prince Victor Emmanuel. 22, who had a close call with deat'n in a skindiving mishap, was recovering today in sick bay aboard the submarine tender Nereus. The prince, son of exiled King Umberto II, said he felt fine when he emerged from a Navy decom pression chamber aboard the Nereus Monday. He was to be held in sick bay another 24 hours for observation. He was in the chamber 18 hours for treatment of air embolism, or bubble, which entered his blood stream when he surfaced without first exhaling compressed air while skindiving off San Diego Sunday. .- Lt. Robinson Kirkpatrick, a Navy doctor, said death could have come in minutes if an air bubble had reached the heart. To hurl a capsule-bearing satel lite into a course around the earth's poles, as planned, the veh icle would have had to reach 18, 000 miles an hour. A Ballistic Missile- Division spokesman declined to say wheth er the first or the second stage was to blame for the insufficient velocity. The first was an intermediate- range, Douglas-built Thor missile; the second, all of which was de signed to enter orbit, was made by Lockheed. Discoverer IV, carrying a 300- pound capsule that was to have been ejected over the Pacific, was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, 170 miles north of this Los Angeles suburb.
