Pillsbury Com pany suggests Granddaddy-Burger Buns, baked at home and filled at the picnic spot with spicy ground beef filling which has b ee n prepared in advance. Nalley's potato chips, Wyandotte olives, radishes, onions and perhaps cherry tomatoes are go-along-withs. J ; -"-, - I i - A GOURMET TREAT On any menu is a flaming dish of Cherries Jubilee. While sweet cherries are on the market, freeze several pints in Vapocans to make this easy treat for winter. The recipe given makes two pints. CHERRIES JUBILEE During a cherry freezing ses sion, set some luscious sweet ones aside to make this easy Cherries Jubilee sauce. Freeze it now or gala dinner party next winter. Yield i 2 Pint Containers. 1 tablespoon cornstarch , cup confectioner's sugar IVt cups orange juice juice of 1 lemon grated rinds of 1 lemon and 1 orange V cup a w e e t butter ), 2 cups pitted sweet cherries -. I tablespoon brandy extract Blend cornstarch and sugar. Gradually add orange juice, stir ring constantly to prevent lump ing. Add lemon juice, grated rinds, butter, and cherries. Cook, Stirring constantly, until thick ened. Cool. Fold in brandy ex tract. Pour into 2 pint - size; sauar, waxed board Vapocan home freezing containers. Seal by pressing down the rigid plastic lid, mark contents on lid identifi cation band, and place in freezer. To serve over pancakes or ice cream, allow to thaw and then re heat. To add a glamour touch, dip sugar cubes into lemon extract nd set aflame. PICNICS In spile of the widespread popu larity of backyard barbecues, the old-fashioned picnic in the park seems to be holding its own. If you don't believe it, drive out past Moore Park any noon, afternoon and any time over a weekend. Superintendent A. L. Knowles and his crew keep the lawns cut and green (he must .do most of the sprinkling at night) and the trees cast inviting shade. It's surprising how quickly cool breezes restore lagging appetites, so if you're picnic-bound these days, here's an idea to tuck in your picnic menu file. We call it Granddaddy-Burger, a huge eight- inch bun thats filled with spicy ground beef cooked in tomato sauce. - Prepare the sauce at home and keep it hot for the picnic in a thermos. Or, if you like to cook outdoors, simmer it on the camp fire or portable grill. The big buns are extra special because there's cheese baked in side, and they're easy to- make with hot roll mix. One package makes two Granddaddy-Burger buns, each large enough to serve four ravenous teen agers or six moderately hungry, adults. GRANDDADDY-BURGER BUNS 1 package Pillsbury Hot Roll Mix . 1 cup warm (not hot) water 2 cups shredded Cheddar ' cheese 1 tablespoon soft butter Vi teaspoon black pepper REFRESHING Dilute frozen limeade concen trate according to the directions on the can and freeze some of the drink in your icecube trays. Add some of the frozen limeade cubes to tall glasses of gingerale. HONEY SYRUP When making muffins or rolls, place a tablespoon of honey syrup In the bottom of greased muffin cup. To make honey syrup, com bine 1-3 cup brown sugar, 2-3 cup honey ' and 3 tablespoons melted butter. . SAMD-REI.ISH .Combine pickled beets and canned Blue Lake green beans for refreshing picnic salad-relish. Garden fresh flavor and color are yours when the words Blue Lake appear on the label and you know you're eating an Oregon product as well. ,, H KRAUT Sprinkle yeast from Hot Roll Mix over warm water in large bowl. Slir to dissolve. Add the dry mix and blend well. Let rise in warm place (85 to 90, degrees I until light and doubled in size, 30 to 60 minutes. Meanwhile blend cheese, butler and pepper. Mold into two patties, - about V4 inch thick. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface to a 16xB-inch rectangle. Cut into two 8-inch squares. Mois ten -edges. Place a cheese pattie in the center of each square. Seal by bringing edges up over cheese and pinching firmly togeth er. Place sealed side down on well-greased baking sheet. Flatten slightly. Let rise in warm place until light - and doubled in size. 30 to 60 minutes. Bake in mod erately hot oven (375 degrees) 20 to 23 minutes until deep golden brown. Fill cooled buns with Spicy Ground Beef Killing. Cut into wedges. . Makes two 8-inch buns, serving 4 to 6 each. , SPICY GROUND FILLING Melt 1 tablespoon shortening in large skillet. Add 1 pound ground beef and 14 cup chopped onion. Cook until meat loses its red col or. Meanwhile combine one 8 ounce can tomato sauce, one 6 ounce can tomalo paste, Vi cup chopped green pepper, 2 table spoons brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1 to ' 2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tea spoon Worcestershire sauce, teaspoon garlic salt and V4 tea spoon cayenne pepper. Drain fat from meal; then stir in the to malo mixture. Heat thoroughly. NESTEA Nestle's instant tea, Nestea, has a special offer through Klamath Falls markets just now. For iced tea, add a rounded tea spoon of Nestea to a glass of cold tap waler. Slir. Then add ice and sugar and a wedge of lemon if desired. For iced tea for a picnic, make the tea according to directions on the jar, then pour into an ice cube tray and freeze in the re frigerator. If you wish, it can be made stronger and cold water add ed, but if you aren't sure of the water, make it regular strength and it melts into delicious iced tea.
