By MURRAY ROSE NEW YORK AP) - Broadway bookmakers apparently doubt whether freshly crowned heavy weight champion Ingemar Johans son of Sweden can flash his thun der and lightning right against Floyd Patterson in their return bout.. The bookies have made the blitz ed Patterson a 7-5 choice over the Goteborg gunner. In setting this early tine, the bookies have displayed a lot more boldness than a lot of still smart ing, red-faced "experts" especial ly the writer. But on the basis of the informa tion I had and what I had seen. I feel my pick was justified. I predicted it would be an explo sive, bloody battle. I said there was a possibility that Patterson might get nailed but I said I didn't think it would happen. I had plenty of company, too. In the AP poll of the "experts' 63 of 69 picked Patterson, mostly by a kayo. Four of the seven Swedish writers polled picked Pat terson. Presumably thev had seen Johansson in pro action. Ingo visit ed famed Stillman's Gym. He looked at the American style of fighting, did some sparring, and returned to his native land. "I could see I was 'not ready yet for this kind of competition," he said. In 1956 he stopped European champion Franco Cavicchi of Italy at Bologna, Italy in 13 rounds. On Feb. 21, 1953, Johansson de fended his European title against Welshman Joe Erskine, the Brit ish champion who was virtually set for a title fight in America with world champion Floyd Pat terson. Johansson stopped Erskine in the 13th round. Five months later Johansson knocked out Germany's Heinz Neuhaus in the fourth round. "We knew he was ready for the best now," said Edwin Ahlquist, Johansson's adviser. Eddie Machen, the undefeated No. 1 contender from California, was imported. For the first minute Johansson backed away from Machen. Sud denly Ingo's right shot out, crash ing against Machen's temple. The Californian crumpled to the canvas at 1:13. He staggered to his feet but Johansson stormed after him It was all over in 136 seconds. The mighty upset startled the boxing world. Johansson became the No. 1 contender with a 21-0 record, including 13 knockouts. He was matched with Patterson after prolonged, secret negotiations. Next: Johansson's training method. Spokane Whitewashes Bevos By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS , Portland, stiU in the throes of a batting slunf, dropped another game Tuesday night and fell into fifth place in the Pacific Coast League. Chuck Churn of Spokane was the latest pitcher to profit by the Beavers' slump. They were able to get only six hits off him as Spokane won 4 0 in the opener of a four-game series at Spokane. That enabled Spokane to move into fourth place, only a fraction out of third. Spokane is only 5'j games out of lirst place. Portland is a half-game behind that. Two hits and an error gave Spokane a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, and Churn needed no more. But Steve Bilko swatted a homer for Spokane m the sixth and the victors added single runs in the seventh and eighth. George Brunct, the firrt of three Portland pitchers, was the loser. League-leading Sacramento did well, although not playing. The idle Solons picked up a half game on the second-place Vancou ver Moinnties, who couldn't cope with Seattle southpaw Claude Os teon's offerings and fell victim 6-5 in 11 innings.
