MARAUDING BEAR and destructive porcupine damage to
signs in the McCloud USPS ranger district are discouraged
by the novel means pictured above. Jack Prevey, USFS
ranger said, "It is just another way of saving taxpayers'
dollars. Without the spikes, the signs would not last a year.
Using spikes to discourage the animals will extend the life of
a sign tenfold." Not all animals are respectful of the signs;
nails or no nails. Some of the more aggressive animals des

LEATHER CARVING has become a profitable small part,
time business for Lloyd Lung, McCloud postal clerk. A year
go he began his hobby with one stamp. Now, he has 75
stamps and SO hand tools and finds himself "swamped with
orders" from friends and interested persons. '

cash and $20,000 a year in medical

Construction Co., was awarded the
contract for the remodeling of the
Siskiyou County General Hospital
kitchen, during the recent session
of the Siskiyou County Board of
Supervisors. Included in the base
bid is general construction, heat
ing, ventilation and installation of
equipment to be purchased.
Equipment to be purchased
will consist of such items as
ranges, tables, steam tables, and
dish washers, was set up under
separate bids, with Wds ranging
from ltl.215 to $14,825.
After some discussion with Rob
ert Keeney, Medford architect;
Robert McKean, county hospital
administrator, and Jess O'Roke.

visors agreed that McKean and
O'Roke could probably purchase
the required equipment for less
money than the low bid, saving
the county money.
It was indicated by the bids
submitted that the cost of con
struction and estimated cost of
equipment would come to about
$,50,000, whereas the supervisors
had originally allowed $33,000.
leaving a deficit of $15,000.
Following a suggestion made by
McKean, the board agreed to add
$15,000 of this year s unappropri
ated, hospital funds to the al
leady allocated $35,000 of next
year's funds to complete the proj
ect. A unanimous vote was cast
by the board to accept the bid and
complete the construction.
At the urgent request of airport
coordinator, F. H. Christiansen
that the supervisors establish uni
form standards for hangars and
other buildings and on leases
of county airports, in an effort to
eliminate unsightly buildings, the
board agreed to request the plan
ning commission to draw up a
master plan and specifications fof
each county-owned airport.
The proposed purchase and in
stallation of two-way equipment

brought up for discussion, when
