And so far neither agency that takes over for deceased in stitutions has suffered much loss. Nor have depositors or sharehold ersso far had to wait for their money longer than local laws dic tated. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. celebrated its silver anni versary last year. The Federal Savings It Loan Insurance Corp. observes its birthday June 27. Each agency insures accounts up to 110,000 each. Both agencies can pay off ac counts in defunct institutions in cash or move the accounts to other insured institutions. The FDIC has more than 13.000 banks insured and they have built its resources up to nearly two bil lion dollars. So far it has had 438 cases to deal with and its losses have come to about 29 mil lion dollars, or about l'j per cent of its cumulative gross income. The FSLIC insures 3.900 savings and loan associates. It has had 38 insurance cases with a total loss of 5'4 million dollars, or less than 2 per cent of Its cumulative gross income of 324 million dollars. The associations, like the banks, pay for the insurance just as you pay for any insurance you may say that so tar shareholders have never had to wait longer than over a weekend. The U.S. Savings and Loan League points with pride to speed in the most publicized default, that of the Commonwealth Build ing Loan Assn. of Norfolk. Va.. in 1936. Its trouble arose when it found that a big-hearted spinster em ploye (Minnie Mangum) had em bezzled nearly three million dol lars over the years to lavish on friends. On a Friday when the stricken association was still meeting with drawal requests, the FSLIC moved in. transferred all counts to another association, so that shareholders were able to get their money on Monday morning if they wished. This sal ary is more than is paid to his boss, the attorney general, the cir cuit court judges, or the district at torney of Multnomah County, who has some IS courts in his juris diction.
