SUNDAY, JUNE 21, HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE FTVB let Age Too Much For Argentines ' Br JAMES R. WHELAN Uaited Press lateraational BUENOS AIRES (UPI) Aero lineas Argentina reacted like a real good neighbor and sport to the news that its wings are ap parently going to be clipped by Pan American World Airways in the jet age derby. . Pan Am has announced it plans to begin jet passenger service be tween the U.S. and South America at the end of April. Previously, Pan Am had indicated ' its jets would not be on the South Amer ican run until late -this year, giv ing Aerolineas Argentinas the in side track. But the Argentine airline sent out word through its public rela tions chief, Arquimedes Garcia Diaz, that "we are not in a race with Pan American. In fact, we really are delighted with the news. Chin still up, Garcia Diaz add ed: "We congratulate Pan Amer ican on opening jet service to South America. Their jet service, and jets in general are revolu tionizing the aviation industry and making an important contribution to the progress of the world com munity." Of course, the Argentine line could be and is fortified by the knowledge that while Pan Am will be first to offer jet flights be tween North and South America, Aerolineas will pioneer in jet serv ice between South America and Europe. In this continent, the matter of who's 'first" has more than pass ing importance. The Pan Amer ican-Panagra (Pan American Grace) combination has long dom inated the Latin air scene, but it's lately been getting some stiff com . petition from the cutrate service provided by many of the more than GO airlines that operate south of the Rio Grande. Most of the Latin - American airlines function in the red, with their governments picking up the tab in return for carrying the na tion's banner to foreign lands. Aerolineas Argentinas is also government-subsidized, but it can and does lay claim to vast ex perience: 31 years in the business, pilots who have flown more than 120 million miles, and so on. Its jet service to Europe, South Africa and. eventually. New York, will be aboard six British-made Comet Fours, the first of which was commissioned in ceremonies attended by Argentine President Arturo Frondizi. That's how important the Argen tines consider this matter of en tering the jet age. Bone Up On Psychology If Dog Giving You Fits -4 NEW YORK (UPD Bone up on psychology if your dog occasional ly wraps you around his furry paw. So says Robert Bartos. a stu dent of dog psychology and man-t ager of research kennels for a dog food firm. "Never underestimate the pow er of a pet, especially if that pet is a dog, said Bartos. "Some dogs know their masters better than the masters know the dogs. The dogs, therefore, take ad vantage of the masters' good na ture to get awayi-with all sorts ot lowdown dog tricks. A dog that is psychologically in the know, Bartos said, may feign tiredness when he wants to turn his snoot up, spurning a walk in the rain or a ride in a convertible Or. said the expert, he may head for the dog house when you want to show company how well he obeys commands even though the dog knows perfectly well what is expected. In these cases, praise doesn t work, for the more you praise, the more the dog will try to pull the wool over your eyes. Omv punishment of some other show of displeasure will make such an ornery fellow respond. A sharp reprimand or one or two hard taps on the back with a newspaper will work wonders. He 11 know his master is wise to his bluffing." For the normally shy dog. how ever, this approacn won i worn when you want him to perform. "A soft voice and a great deal of praise and gentle handling will brine out the best of his shy na ture. He may be a people-hater from way back and you've got to convince him that people are nice." Bartos said the introvert or ex trovert type is as common in the dog world as it is in the "people world. , F.xtrovert does, he said, resem ble the salesman type. They like nothing better than to be on tne go all day and prefer to be surround ed by people and doggie friends most of their waking hours. The' Introvert type is just the opposite. He feels absolutely mis erable with a lot of people or dogs, and prefers to be left alone to contemplate life. Such a dog. said Bartos, enjoys snoozing much of the time, with an occasional walk alone to break the monotony.
