OREGON Yomen Speak But Not Vote, Church Says SAN FRANCISCO AP) - It's all right for the women among h. 9U million Lutherans in the Missouri Synod to apeak their mind on church business. Rut when it seta down to voting decisions, a doctrinal committee told the synod 44th convention Saturday, the Scriptures say-Jet the men do it: "Let your women keep silence la the churches: for it is not per mitted unto them to speak: but they are commanded to be under obedience." 1 Corinthians 14 M. A few churches in the synod hava let the women vote. At the last convention three years ago in St. Paul, Minn:, a committee was assigned to look into this mat ter of w o m i n sufferage in the church. The committee, headed by the Rev. Walter W. Stuenkel of Mil waukee, has placed before the current convention views frowning an a change. The committee report conceded it wasn't completely clear just how the early church handled the problem. But it quoted Corinthians and Timothy in support of its con tention: "Women must not engage in preaching or in publicly teach ing men in the church; whatever participation of women in con gregational ailaira is granted, the principal must be upheld that women do not usurp authority ever men." The committee urged that "All congregations who administer their allairs through the male vot ers" meeting are urged to continue this policy." As for churches which have granted such sufferage, tha com mittee urged them to get back In line "in the light of scripture and the glorious position of wom an in marriage and in the home." "And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for wom en to speak in the church." 1 fnrinlhiana. 14:35. AP - A gangling high school youth stab bed his stepfather Friday night, then sought unsuccessfully lo keep the wounded man alive by breathing into his throat. Gerald Owen Johnson, 17, said he stabbed Robert Griswold, 4ft. when the stepfather refused to heed his pleas to stop beating htm and his mother. No charges were filed Immediately. Ha returned to Klam ath Falls in U18. worked for a month tiring a locomotive at the Lamm Lumber Company Camp, caught pneumonia, spent a long time recuperating, then secured work with the Southern Pacific Company tiring a locomotive on the OCE line Ha was again promoted to engi- ner and remained on that job until his retirement. White, these days, appears fit and robust. He walks frequently for exercise, and the garden keeps htm busy. "I feel good." he says. H likes to lc,t his keen mem- ory dance back over his teamster days.
