Krl K Long of Louisiana bait let all the way with sheriff's deputies Thursday night as they hauled him to a menial hospital (or the second time in three weeks. "God damn it, God damn it. God.damn it," the rumpled and sweating governor bellowed. "Hell, I'm not going to get in there." he yelled when they tugged him into a sheriff's car to take him to southeast Louisiana Slate Hospital at Mandeville. So miles to the east. The B-year-old governor swung a roundhouse right at a deputy but missed. "You-all look, you all look," he shouted. Dr. Chester Williams, coroner of East Baton Rouge Parish, said Gov. Long had suffered from delu sions of-persecution. The medical name is paranoic schizophrenia. But Long remained unconvinced that he needed hospital treatment. I don't feel I need to be hos pitalized," Long told physicians at the Mandeville institution. Then he added: "However, I am not attempting to tell the lieuten ant governor what to do." The fantastic events leading im mediately to Long's detention at Mandeville began Thursday morn ing when the restless governor in formed his wife and doctors at Ochsm-r i Foundation Hospital in New Orleans that he planned to leave. The governor's release from the Galveston clinic had been ar ranged in a compromise with Long's family and a promise that he would take at least two weeks of treatment at Ochsner. For three and a half hours doc tors argued. Long remained ada mant. This interval gave Mrs. Long time . to arrange for the pickup. : When his car crossed the East Baton Rouge Parish line, deputies stopped it, then drove him to the parish courthouse. Long, growing angry, refused to move from his car. Dr. Williams and another physician interviewed the gover nor as he sat on the front seat smoking a cigarette and joking. They obtained, then, an 'order frorn Dist.' Judge Fred Leblanc commiling the- governor to the state hospital. That's when the fireworks really started. The scene shouting police, ar rested newsmen, barricades and threats of campra smashing harked back to a day long dead when Long's elder brother, the late'Huey P. Long, ran Louisiana as his own kingdom. Dr. Williams said later that Gov. Long had thoughts and be liefs not fully based on fact. He also said he had a bad heart. - At Mandeville, Dr. Belcher said Long had been given a hasty phy sical and assigned to a private room in one of the hospital's 20 buildings. The governor faces a more exhaustive physical examin ation today. . m 1 i T 1 dm SIGURD SOLVASON KF Resident Heart Victim Sigurd Solvason. 70, a native ol I'embina, North Dakota, and a resident of Klamath Falls for the past four years, died at Hillside Hospital. June 18, following a heart attack. He is survived by the wi dow, Emma; a daughter, Mrs. r'tsie Bousqurt, Klamath Falls: three sons. Dr. Harold Solvason. Minneapolis, Randy, Houston, Tex as, John, Kedondo Beach, and 12 grandchildren. Solvason. a civil engineer, had been engaged until recently in designing and build ing paper mills and other struc tures. Funeral arrangements will be announced Jaler, Smokey Bear Due At Pair i Smokey, the grumpy - voiced bear that for years has chastised the public for carelessness with fire in the woods, is going to Bp pear at the Oregon Centennial Ex position. 1 His visit is financed by roy alties received from commercial likenesses and items endorsed by Smokey. Five per cent of the money received from sale of the various objects is plowed into lire prevention in accordance with Congressional edict. The exhibit in which he appears is called "Smokey Bear and His Friends " It is presented by the Keep Oregon Green Association, the Oregon Board of Forestry and the United States Forest. Somewhere along- landlocked Rt. 46 the seal joggled open a lock and escaped Robert Dietch, an animal train er who runs a children's zoon Fair Lawn, said he had missed a turn going to a birthday party here. He stopped to ask direc tions. It was then he discovered the seal, named Sally, had escaped. He searched all afternoon with his assistant but no Sally. If anyone sees Sally and offers her a fish, she'll come flipping. Dietch said. "She'll make for a swamp or a swimming pool," he added. Sally, whose bark, said Dietch. is worse than her bite, is 3 years old, tame and weighs 175 pounds. Members of the Park and Recreation Department Board of Directors received word at a meet ing this week that the request was confirmed. Members reviewed 20 applica tions for a DOsition as Parks and : Recreation superintendent open since Robert Bonney resigned ear ly in June to accept a similar job in El Cerrito. Mrs. Nelson said she was born 'in Rochester, N Y., in 1858: that ner nusoano. James, a siock broker, died many years ago, and an only child died in infancy. Looking forward to her next birthday. Mrs. Nelson said. "I'd 'like to stay around for a while. I m having a good time. I've never 'grown old. I've never worn draw strings on my bonnet or woolen drawers." She tdded. her eyes twinkling.
