Germany (API Eco- T romics Minister Ludwig Erhard - and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer met privately (or an hour and 45 minutes today in what looked like a showdown in their open quarrel about Adenauer's decision to re main rhanrellnr. Informants said Adenauer in vited Erhard to the chancellery. Erhard had said Tuesday he was not taking any initiative about seeing the 83-year-old Adenauer What went on behind closed - doors was not made public. Er hard did not talk to reporters. , The West German government's - portly No. 2 man drove to the chancellery for the first meeting since Adenauer decided last week not to step into the nation's presi dency. Erhard had been the favorite ' to take over the government. His decision to fight, on his return irom a visit to Washington, con fronted Adenauer with the sharp- est challenge to his political su " premacy since he took office a decade ago. The big question was whether Erhard could muster enough sup port in the ruling Christian Dem ocratic party to force Adcn- - aucr to loosen his iron grip. As economic minister and the architect of West Germany's post- . war recovery, Erhard is consid ered one of the party's biggest vote Betters. The propaganda draws heavilv on German national feeling. Party leaders seem exceedingly sensitive to criticism. Western non-recognition is a particularly sore point, and much is made in official propaganda of the "success of our delegation in G e n e v a." Communist officials make no secret of their feeling that the admission of East Ger man Foreign Minister Lothar Boltz to the conference even only as an observer fulfilled one of their major aims. The existence of West Berlin as i .permanent point of comparison with the Communist system is an :thcr sore point.
