Northwest Air lines reported. The U.S. Air Force said it had no planes in the area at the time, prompting speculation that Soviet fighters had approached the Se-attle-to-Tokyo Northwest DC7C. The plane crew reported that" the closest approach came witff in two or three miles but the plane or planes did not cross in front of the airliner. The American plane continued on course and, reached Tokyo ahead of schedule. Its 46 passen gers were asleep and apparently! unaware of the incident. A Northwest spokesman said the mystery planes appeared when the airliner was some 200 miles southeast of the Soviet Union's Kamchatka Peninsula, at 50 degrees SO minutes north lati tude, 162 degrees 55 minutes east longitude, and in the center of the busy commercial airlane used by five U.S., Canadian and European rcompanies. Siberian-based Soviet Jets have recently been reported patroling the region of the great circle air lane between Japan and Alaska. An airline spokesman said from vapor trails and specks in the dawn sfy, it was assumed two or three jets were involved. The planes dropped two flares, pre sumably to identify the American craft.
