Growing Pains Of Malin, Progress Made By Town, Entwined With Kalinas Br RUTH KING The growing pains of Malin and the town's progress through later years have been closely entwined witn the Kalina family since that September day in 1909 when Alois Kalina climbed over the wheel of a buekboard and surveyed the sagebrush dotted land on the shore of a shallow lake. Not long after that day he bought 46 acres of land from W. C. Dalton for the townsite of Malin. gave the land for the high school, elementary school, the church and the jail. Like others of the colonists, the family faced hardships as rugged as those in the homeland they had left. Kalina worked away from home after putting in an oat and rye crop and Mrs. Kalina set tlie cut bundles of grain into shocks for threshing. They grubbed sage brush during the winter and lack ing heavier equipment did much of the work with hand tools. The name Malin. spoken in the Czech language with soft inflec tion, suggested by Mr. and Mrs Kalina. was chosen for the town that was soon to be. There was a Malin in' Czecho slovakia that centered a commer cial horseradish production re gion. where the roots of the pun gent plant of the mustard family grew big as a man s arm. In a urvey of the raw new country the settlers had adopted as home, wild horseradish was found and the old world and the new were once more linked by a common name. The young Kalinas, both of farm ancestry near Prague, arrived in New ork in W0 and Alois Ka lina tried his hand in Chicago as a machinist, became a tavern owner and joined a Czech coloniz ation club. This membership brought him to Maun. He tried farming for a season or two. then built the second mer cantile store in Malin, which through the later years with fam ily effort, became the town's prin cipal trading spot. Supplies were hauled from Klamalh Falls by wagon. There were 17 gates to be opened and closed between the two towns, stub bora combinations, of barbed ire and juniper posls. The rutted road skirted the lake. Black clouds of mosquitoes that rose from the 'shallow water tormented men and animals. Win ter mud stalled the horse-drawn wagons. On one such trip Kalina was forced to unload 2S one-hundred pound tacks sugar, carry the load a quarter of a mile be yond the axle-deep dray and re load on solid ground. Indians from the reservation were good customers, sometimes sleeping on the floor of the Ka lina store. They helied with fall harvests and danced and sang from dusk to dawn. Mrs. Kalina and their sons and daughter assisted in the expand ing family business, while Kalina senior went about the business oi helping the town grow to matur ity. When it came time to incorpor ate Kalina paid for the incorpor ation proceedings. The law re quired that the town have 150 resi dents for incorporation. Malin had 151 His appointment as mayor for a one year term followed. With the city's first election he was the people's choice. For 25 years he was returned to office. He vol untarily retired at the close of a quarter century of civic duty. He was responsible for getting the town lighted. A drilled well at the Kalina home furnished wa ter for the first volunteer fire de partment. Times were a it rugged about the time of incorporation and to keep the town's warrants circulat ing, he dug down into his own pockets for many months until city income caught up with the deficit on the ledgers. Malin needed water and sewer systems and these were other Ka lina sagas. Malin's water supply is considered one of the best in Southern Oregon and the system is self supporting. He worked for establishment of the Malin Park. He served as pres ident of the chamber of commerce nd as a director, was interested in good roads and equitable freight rates. In later years before hi retirement he made hundreds of trips to Portland for merchandise after modernizing his transporta tion with trucks. His wife. sons. Vaclav and Louis and daughter Emma, have followed the pattern of commu nity service started nearly a half century ago, when Mr. and Mrs Kalina. gave free New Years F.ve parties for all their custo mers at a time when there was little cash to spare for entertainment. Another international wine com petition has been slated for May in Langenlois, Austria. France. Germany and the Unit ed States hold annual wine fair, but each is limited to the national vintages. The American competi tive tastings are held in Septem ber at Sacramento and Pomona, California. The Gila Indian cliff dwellings in southwestern New Mexico are caves built more than 600 years go. Walls are so well preserved that finger prints of original build ers on interior walls can be been clearly today. T.A. On January 3, 192S, we opened our first theatre and ployed silent pictures until 1930, when we built our present modern theatre next door, to introduce sound on film to our com munity. We are still striving to. please the patrons of our community. On September, 1940, we built the Broadway Amusement Hall on the site of the old theatre building where many name bands and local orchestras have played for the pleasure of the public. For other entertainment there have been banquets, parties and meetings. For our young people and oldsters also, we have weekly roller skat ing and special parties. J
