Bashful Handy Andy To Blossom For SF Evicted Family Back In Court LOS ANGELES (AP) The Are- chiga family is back in court this time Superior Court to pro test condemnation proceedings which resulted in their eviction from Chavez Ravine. A similar suit was dismissed in federal court because no federal question was involved. The family charges the City Housing Authority's condemnation of their property was a fraud be cause the agency had no intention of using the property for public housing. After a housing project plan was shelved, the acreage was sold to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chavez Ravine is being cleared now for a new Dodger ballpark. SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-Andre Rodgers. a shy guy from Nassau in the Bahama Islands, is aboul to blossom forth as a scintillating shortstop for the San Francisco Giants. This lad. who never saw a base ball game until he was 17 years old, has all the actions to become a great fielding shortstop and a slugger at the plate, say the experts. And. if he makes the grade as a star, give the credit to mana ger Bill Rigney. who displayed the patience ol a Job in keeping the 24-year-old British subject on the field when he was causing the Giants to lose ball game alter ball game. "Andre's just nervous tense j- and he'll get over it," said Kig ney. "Even after 30 ball games he still has trouble relaxing. But Rigney, along with many other observers, has an idea that "Handy Andy" is going to be quite a ball player. "I like the way he stands at the plate." said Ty Cobb, the old Georgia Peach, as he watched the Giants lose their series to the Milwaukee Braves. Says Ernie Lombardi, former National League batting cham pion: "He has a picture swing." Rodgers is batting around ' the .270 mark which isn't bad for a rookie. But he made so many er rors of commission and omission during the early part of the sea son that some spectators laughed right out loud at his antics on the field. Now they are pulling as hard MIXED FOl'RSOMIS for him as they are for any man on the ball club. Rodgers has a sling-shot arm that is accurate. He is fust in fielding balls and on the bases. He is anxious to learn. And he is most anxious of all to please. But he lacks the instinct on cer tain plays that many men have because they have played the amc all their lives. These. Rig ney is sure, will come along in time. Rodgers' biggest night came against the Cincinnati Reds when lie clouted two homers and knocked another ball against the left (ield screen, where it was caught. "But sometimes I get very tense at the plate." he says, "and 1 can't move the bat off my shoulder. If the pitcher is wild, this works fine, as Andre gets a walk and trots down to first base the per feet play for a lead-off man. Many believe that Rodgers has the quickest pair of hands in base ball. Still, he has trouble fielding sometimes because he doesn't know whether to charge or lay back on a ball coming at him "Another year's experience and he'll be one of the finest," says Rigney.
