Since the big Chicago blonde filled both requirements she won a personal and professional suc cess Wednesday nifiht at the world premiere of her now Columbia film, "Middle of the Night," one of the two oflicial American fes'ival entries. Miss Novak lias been criticized for one thing and another since her arrival here Tuesday. But as any movie historian could have predicted, the complaints turned to cheers the moment she made her first public appearance Wednesday A clinging, revealing gown of white and sapphire jersey helped. And of a small band of inter- national stars, Miss Novak alone produced the old-style star excitement. Ordered her chauffeur to out run the press motorcade and dis appointed hundreds of autograph fans by dodging away to the villa ol Prince Aly Khan instead of the suite prepared for her at the Carlton Hotel. Announced when her hideout was discovered that she was go ing to bed but instead slipped out to a nearby village to dine and dance till dawn with Cary Grant. Bluntly canceled all television and press interviews. Arranged a party tonight on Aly Khan's yacht for Cary Grant and others. WASHINGTON (API dent Kisenhower may have put not only the Democratic Congress but himself on a political spot with his demand lor speedy action on highway, housing and wheat legislation. Kisenhower had asked the increase to finance addi tional grants to the stales lor con duction of interstate highways. There is no dispute in Congress over Kisenhower s request for ad ditional loan insurance authority or the Federal Housing Adminis tration. But both the Senate and House committee have included this in general housing bills which contain features to which Eisen hower objects. Mansfield said the housing bills will not he pared down to the limits the President wants. The House Agriculture Commit tee answered Eisenhower's plea for lower wheat supports by vot ng Wednesday to maintain these price props at !I0 per cent of par ity lor the next two years, instead of the 7.- per cent supports now in effect. The House committee did approve a 30 per cent reduction in wheat acreage allotments. House Vetoes Ike Request WASHINGTON 'AP '-President Eisenhower's request (or 260 mil lion dollars to build a new super aircraft carrier reportedly has been turned down by a House Appropriation subcommittee. Instead, the 17-nian group has decided. Ihe money should he pent to beef up antisubmarine and missile programs and to maintain stronger reserve and National Guard forces. The subcommittee has agreed io almost the exact amount asiicd by the President S4n.80O.0OO.0O0 in new appropriations for the Defense Department for Ihe year starling July 1. "The amount of new money won't vary substantially Irom what the President requested," a member disclosed. "The only dis agreement between us and the President is how it should be spent." The subcommittee's recommen dations are subject to review by the entire 50-member committei later this month.
