SUNDAY, MAY 10, 1959 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON Hal Wood's Weekend. Short Shots By HAL WOOD PALM SPRINGS, Calif., IVP in warcn 01 195B, John, Landy wen on nis way to a new world record in the mile run in the Australian Track and Field tnampionships at Melbourne A rival, Ron Clarke, stumbled and (ell hi front of Landy. The lanky champion, instead of gun ning past, stopped to help the i aiien ioe, mus losing a chance for his world mark. But with the act. P, Coleman, onetime verv surrpss. ful Texas and Arizona hieh schnnl coach but now in business for nimseit as manager of the swank rirecmi i,oage in Palm Desert Calif. LOVE OF CAME ' "We organized this hall of fame because we believed there was too much emphasis on winning in me sports pages o( the nation,' cays Coleman. "For the outstand ing act of sportsmanship each year, a panel of 50 sports writers around the country gives a plaque." . The sportsmanship hall of fame Is growing, but not by leaps and bounds. It has sponsors, but not enough. It would like a building In which to place plaques and other items involved in a great act of sportsmanship. Here are . some of the great acts of sportsmanship that have been honored by this hall of lame: in me 19.5 national open golf championship, Bobby Jones stopped play during the final round and . asked that he be penalized a stroke. He had moved his ball slightly in addressing it. "Nobody saw the ball move except Jones. Willy McFarlane beat Jones by a single stroke for the championship. PERRY MOSS Perry Moss, onetime University ef Illinois quarterback, interrup ted a football game with Iowa, 'at risk of a penalty to his own ' club, to direct attention of of ficials to the grogginess of a rival Iowa lineman. If the play had gone on, the Iowan might thave ieriously been hurt. ' i ' Baron Pierre de C our bet founder of the "nodern" Olympic! games. A man who believed if' the youth of the world could be brought together in sports there would be- no better way to pro mote mutual respect and under (landing. The late coach Tad Jones of! Yale warned his players that Charlie Buell of Harvard, was playing with an injury. "The first player who roughs Buell will come out of the game and off the field," Jones told his players.' Buell played the entire game and Yale lost. Of such deeds is sportsmanship built, and commemorated in the Sportsmanship Hall of Fame. Robinson, who was stripped of his title by the National Boxing Association earlier last week, found an unexpected friend Fri day in Frank Gilmer, chairman of the Illinois commission Gilmer said his IAC would glad ly bill the bout as a midloweight title . match provided Robinson igned before May 25. . Gilmer said it was his "guess" that "everybody else would also recognize it as a championship light," despite the NBA action which rame after Robinson Ig nored III April 25 deadline to de find hit crown. t I Senators Fall ToTn-City; Share Lead By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Tri-City knocked off league-leading Salem. 11-4. Friday night to drop the Senators into a percent age tie with Eugene in the North west League baseball standings. Both Eugene, by virtue of its 64 win over Yakima, and the Senators now have a games-won percentage of .667. However, Sa lem still holds a half game edge in the won-loss column. Carl Hutzler s first inning, three run homer gave Salem a g o o d jump on Tri-City, but the Braves came back with single tallies in the first two frames, then clinched it with four mpre hi the fourth. Tri-City got another four runs in the fifth inning and closed out its scoring with a single in the seventh. Salem managed to pick up one run on three Tri-City errors in the eighth. Ted Edmunds went the route to earn the win for the Braves. In the other league games, the last place Lewiston Broncs took Wenatchee 6-1 to drop the Chiefs into fifth place. Tri-City stepped into Wenatchee's old fourth place berth. The Eugene Emeralds won over the Bears on the strength of home runs, by Joe Sparks, Chuck Hiller and Jerry Robinson. Sparks' blast was a two-run affair in the first frame. The other two were solo homers. Yakima got into the power act too, with Herm Lewis clouting solo homeruns in. the second and tilth innings. Lewiston's Thornton Kipper twirled a neat six-hitter to lead the Broncs past Wenatchee. Kip per gave up the Chiefs' lone run in the first inning. Ron Wilkins' two-run double in the sixth frame broke a 1-1 tie and put Lewiston in the lead to stay. Philpdelphians Buzz Over Talk PITTSBURGH (AP)-The base ball world is buzzing with Phila delphia Phillies' trade talk. General Manager John Quinn of the Phillies, who is making an ex tended road trip with the club, says he has several irons in the tire. - "We have made propositions to several clubs and we are now waiting to hear from them," Quinn said Friday. ' Some observers felt a trade was imminent because when the club left Philadelphia Thursday to open a five-game series with the Pitts burgh Pirates the players Were given meal money for only three days instead of the customary week or more. WINS BY A NOSE NEW YORK (UPI1 . Fraley's Facts And Figures By OSCAR FRALEY NEW YORK, H'Pli - Fearless rraleys (acts and figures: Pimlico, the Baltimore track where they'll run the second leg ot tne triple Crown next Salur day, is very cognizant of Its his tory what with George Washing ton once having sent in his shill ings there. So now they're giving Capt. John Smith an assist in the nam ing of Preakness hopeful First Landing. The colt was foaled at Doswell. Va., a short distance from Jamestown, which was cele brating the 350th anniversary of the first successful English settle ment in the new world .... so what better name than First Landing? . . . Willie Shoemaker, who won the Kentucky Derby aboard Tomy Lee, will be the big man in the Preakness as he shifts to Sword Dancer. But Willie , at 4 feet, 10 inches and 98 pounds stands as one of the world's smallest ath letes . ,' he wears a 14 shoe . . . HAIL THE DOGGIE lulu ujill h Matin-.! unt f. montn ana, in preparing tor this sausage spectacle, a song has been written called "The Hot Dog Polka." It puts the knock on Bos ton beans and southern turnip greens and boasts "there ain't no bones in a hot dog." . . . It's a hot item ... Veteran Mike Turnesa likes the U.S. Open chances of big George Bayer on the oversized Winged root course next month and, be cause of their ruggedness, also favors such strong men as Doug Ford and Arnold Palmer ... but this one still is going to be won with the short irons and the put ter, which legislates heavily against big George . . . As evidence of the fantastic boom in skin diving, more than 8 million persons now participate in the sport. The big surge is in underwater photography and spear fishing . . . It s getting so that above surface anglers hardly know whether they'll bring up fish or man . . . AT THE RACES Ingemar Johansson, who chal lenges Floyd Patterson for the heavyweight crown on June 25, is making big claims for his lethal right hand and the odds against him are down to 13-3. But he si ill is a mystery man and, while he looks good punching, the principal question is how he'll take a wal lop on the whiskers . . . The sus picion here is: not good . . . Fred Corcoran, tournament manager who leaves Tuesday for Australia to select the Melbourne site for the 1959 international golf and Canada Cup championships, tells this one in farewell. Seems there was this baseball fan who made his first visit to a race track and watched without enthusiasm. But finally he came up with a long shot which was racing head and head to the wire against a favorite. As they pound ed down to the finish, he leaped on his seat and screamed: "Slide, you bum, slide." Cougar Homers Defeat Ducks PULLMAN (AP) - Washington Stale batters clouted two home runs Friday to lead the Cougars to a 5-4 Northern Division base ball victory over Oreeon. Three runs in the sixth innine gave the Ducks a 3-2 lead, but a triple by Dave Jones and a homer by Floyd Damon in the Coueai half of the frame nave WSC the edge. Oregon scored again in the eighth and the Cougars won it in tne ninth. The loss dropped Oreaon from a first place tie in the standings to third place behind Oregon State and Washington.
