OREGON PAGE THREE WrtV PAUL PITKIN DAVID WOOD SUE FERRELL Work Crew Said Busy By MYRTLE WIMER FORT KLAMATH-For the past month, a crew of workmen has been busy at Denton Park, located four miles north of Fort Klamath oa Crater Lake Highway 62. The 37-acre tract is owned by Harry Smith Sr., and his son, Harry Jr., who are also concessionaires at Crater Lake National Park. Denton Park was purchased in 1958 from the former owners, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Chouinard, who remained as caretakers and man agers of the property until Janu ary o( this year, when they re- turned to their former home at Burbank. Originally owned and op erated for many years by the late George M. Denton and his wife (she is now Mrs. Martin F. Yegge of Lynwood. California), the busi ness property consisted of two ponds, named the Old Swimmin' Hole, extensive adjoining picnic site with camping' facilities, and four rental cabins. The property was sold in 1956 to the Chouinards. Last year, the new owners built a large modern caretakers' resi dence in the park, and dressing rooms at the swimming pond were added, in addition to a stand where toft drinks, etc., were dispensed This, year, the premises have been renovated, cleaned up and freshly painted where necessary; (he two large ponds have been dredged out and a new diving board installed in the swimming pond, where a boat will be on hand for future emergencies; the second pond has been stocked with trout and for a nominal sum, fisher men may enjoy their favorite sport this season at Denton Park. With their small daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Happel of Crater Lake Park have moved into the caretakers' residence and will have charge of the business this year. Happel has been employed by the Smiths as maintenance foreman at Crater Lake Lodge, and will con tinue in that capacity. His .wife formerly worked in the souvenir shop in the cafeteria building in the park, and she and her husband also operated the warming hut there during the winter snow sea son. This year, Mrs. Happel will manage the Denton Park during the day, with her husband return ing from Crater Lake in the. eve ning to assist her. In charge of this spring's ac tivities at Denton Park is Charles Gar Icy of Ashland, who is em ployed seasonally in maintenance work in Crater Lake Park. Until he resumed work on Monday, May 4,; in Crater Lake Park, Walter Baxter was one of the crew; his wife is year-round office employe of the Crater Lake National Park Service. STEWART L. HAWKINS Basin Private Finishes School Army Private Stewart L. Haw kins, 18, of Klamath Falls recent ly completed a telephone installa tion and repair course at the Army's Southeastern Signal School, tort Gordon, Georgia. Hawkins entered the Army in November, 1958, and received bas ic training at Fort Ord. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Hawkins of 2814 Anderson Avenue, Klamath Falls. Pitkin, is an auto machine technology stu dent. Wood is in diesel tech nology. He is the son of M. D. Wood. Miss Ferrell, a medical technology student, is the daughter of George E. Ferrell of 332 North Tenth' Street. Miss Smith, the daughter of Earl L. Smith, is an accounting technology student. Players Club will meet on Wednesday evening at 7:45 in the city library clubroom. New First Graders Mills School BUSINESS MEETING ETNA The home of Mrs. Hazel Naylor was the setting for the business meeting of the Ladies Aid Society of the Congregational Church on Friday afternoon. RAF To Bomb Mountain Top LONDON (UPI) The Royal Air Force announced it would bomb a Turkish mountain top near the Soviet border today to demolish secret rocket equipment lost in a plane crash. The equipment was scattered near the top of 14.000-foot Mount Subhan Dag, about 100 miles from the Soviet border, when a British troop transport crashed 13 days ago. The secret missile equipment aboard was en route to the Woo- mera rocket range in Australia when the plane smashed into the peak, killing 12 men. British paratroopers and rescue squads reached the wreckage and buried the bodies of the victims but it was considered too hazard ous to try to bring down the equipment and too dangerous to leave it where it might be found.
