Main St. Lawrence Seaway Open For Traffic MONTREAL, (API The St Lawrence Seaway, a project de- baled by politicians for hall a century and completed by 15.000 workers in live years, was opened Saturday to shipping traffic of the world. Shortly after 8 a.m.. the ice breaker D'Iberville, laden wilh government officials, parliamen tarians, newspapermen and sea way officials, moved into the en trance of the seaway just be low Montreal's Jacques Cartier linage. Behind the' D'Iberville was a flotilla of flag-bedecked canallers, freighters, tankers, and tugs. Some 70 ships were waiting to move westward through the new waterway toward the North Amer lean Continent's heartland, 2,400 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. At Ogdcnsburg, N.Y., the west ern end of the 000-mile seaway, nineteen Canadian - owned cargo snips started to move loward Mon treal and the sea. . Although no formal ceremonies were planned, hundreds of persons -.jot up early to watch the first ships pass through the Montreal end of the seaway. They gathered mainly along the seaway bank near at. Lambert, across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal. Overhead planes and helicop ters, many carrying photograph ers, flew up and down the seaway as the flotilla slowly moved along. Formal dedication ceremonies will be held June 26 wilh Presi dent Eisenhower and Queen Eliza beth. Eisenhower opened the U.S.uTi built locks' near Massena, N.Y., last JulyV..";.-'.' Cargoes aboard the ships indi cate what the wheatbelt consumer can expect directly from abroad: automobiles, French champagne, Scotch whisky, beer, wool, glass ware; Belfast twine, ham, benzine, jjte, nails and refrigerators. Ma jor. tonnage from the West will be grain. The five-year, 475-million-doilar project was financed jointly by U.S. and Canadian taxpayers. Ca nadians bore the major costs, as the largest portion of the water way lies within Canada.- . It is expected thai tolls will pay operating costs during the next 50 years, with the L niled stales get ting $1 and Canada $3 from ev ery $4 in lolls. FULL or TWIN SIZE 50 or imimo t7je fhont 4-3134 Trading On Stock Market Closes With NEW YORK (UPI) - The stock market sulfered a touch of spring fever on Wednesday and Thurs day but the bulls regained control of the situation on Friday. The market ended Ihe week on a note of strength as good earn- ings reports, favorable dividend announcements and some favora ble economic forecasts restored steam to the Spring rally. The industrial average has risen to nine out of the past 11 sessions, during which the whole market has added more than nine billion dollars to stock values. The eain in stock values last week was only nominal because of a sharp setback on Wednesday and a fairly steep decline on Thursday. A good rally on Friday left the list in good shape. The electronics issues were good most of the week, even when profit-taking in mid-week was tax ing its toll on the "blue chips" which had paced tne recent up surge. Brokers said the realizing of profits was to be expected after the market's rise to historic highs. They had looked for a neriod of consolidation during which the market would move in a narrow range while investors assessed the gains accumulated during the advance. However, brokers said this period of consolidation was needed to set the stage for con tinuance of the spring rally. The fact the market came back so soon on Friday with good gains and increased volume was a la vorable factor. American telephone Issues, which had soared the previous week after stockholders approved a three-for-one split of the stock, met some of the stiffest resist ance. The old stock lost more than 8 points on the week while the new split shares were down 3 points. The- electronics continued to amaze the market. This industry, more than any other, has mir rored the dramatic postwar boom in the economy. Top Wall Street analysts say this group has bare ly tapped its potential. Gains in Ihe electronics border ed on the sensational. Zenith soared 39 points, Texas Instru ments 24V4, Maytag 9, Litton 20, and Hoffman 414. On an over-all basis, auto stocks scored good gains, mainly reflect ing very favorable earnings re ports and the first cash dividend declaration in five years by Amer ican Motors, which rose 2 points in very active trading. Chemicals scored good gains. Du Pont rose 4V4. Allied Chemi cal 57 and Thiokol more than 11 points. The Thiokol "when is sued" stock added more than 4 points. Union Carbide, despite an excellent earnings forecast, lost more than a point. Havana Isn't Wide Open Like It Was HAVANA (API -- Havana isn't the wide open town it used to be. It s still a gay and friendly city. but the earnest young men who run the revolutionary police have put a stop to much of the pros titution, they have chased hun dreds of procurers off the streets and cracked down on a big abortion racket which thrived in the days of President Fulgencio Batista. Prostitution still exists in Ha vana.-but swanky establishments in the. good neighborhoods what the police call "moral zones" have been shut down. Dozens of hotelitos (little hotels) have been closed. A sharp crackdown hit the nar cotics business, long flourishing in Havana, and a revolutionary mil itary court emphasized it by sen tencing one of Havana's mari juana bosses to death. He ap pealed and probably will wind up with a long jail term. Gambling, for centuries a favor ite Cuban pastime, has been sharply reduced. Casino opera tions are limited to the big hotels catering lo tourists. Five and - dime casino operations were banned when the revolutionary government permitted a reopening of the gambling centers after a shutdown for a cleanup. HST Can't Make Centennial Talk SALEM (AP) - Former Presi dent Harry Truman has declined an invitation to speak at the' Ore gon centennial exposition on July 4, Gov. Mark Hatfield said Satur day. He said Truman has a pre vious engagement. Hatfield said he has Invited former President Herbert Hoover to speak there on his birthday, Aug. 10. George Meany, president of the AFL-CIO, his been invited to speak at the exposition on Labor Day. U.N. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge and U.N. President Charles Malik have been invited to visit Oregon for United Nations observ ances at the centennial. Bullish Note The drugs, which have been receiving some very favorable comments in the brokers' reports, also featured on the upside. Vick jumped 9, Warner Lambert 6, and Colgate, a soap company which announced plans to enter the drug field, 19, Norwich Pharmacat tacked on 7 points. Leading oil stocks were under pressure, reflecting in part de mands oy the Arab nations for a bigger share of the profits from oil produced in that area. Gull lost 3t in this section. In the cameras. Eastman Ko dak soared 11' points, Polatoid 9'M and Bell & Howell 6'j. As can be seen from this select ed group of prices, the best gains appeared in issues outside the group used to compile the aver ages.
