Sweeping Changes Set In I(U Math Department Ix-Gridder lets 90 Days SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) The resident of the Spokane School ioard pleaded guilty Thursday to -.idling up a 16-year-old girl and vas sentenced to 90 days in jail or vagrancy, Edward S. Justice, 46, a busi- lessman and former halfback for Ihe Washington Redskins pro foot ball team, began his jail sentence immediately. Justice, married and the father of two boys, admitted he picked up the girl and took her tor a ride in his car Easter Sunday even ing. He denied any "lewd or dis solute" conduct. The girl, who is married but separated from her husband, ,did not file a complaint against Jus tice. Neither did she appear in court. Justice was arrested after po ice received telephone calls from several persons who saw Justice and the girl together. Justice's attorney, Harold Glee- son, said he will resign as school board president. He said his fam ily "is sticking by him." Parents of eighth graders and freshmen in city schools are, re ceiving notification of sweeping changes contemplated (or the .mathematics department of Klam ath Union High School this week. They are asked to confer with their youngsters a n d to choose ' mathematics courses they want them to take next fall. Members of the department have devised a way to allow students a wider latitude of choice, to give j slow learners a good math ground ling and to give bright students hither math training never before given in KUHS. Howard Bailey, KUHS math in structor, who got the ball rolling on the. proposed program, said the freshman year will be a de cisive one for math students. They will be tested while they are still in the eighth grade and judged from math grades for the year. ' Then they will be advised, but not lorced. into one of three freshman ninth classes. , Good students may go straight Into basic algebra. Or, if they 'rHbose, they can take the pro gram's keystone class, a bright '. tinted Up general 'mathematici ' course. Poor math students will be required to take, either in their freshman or sophomore year, a .basic arithmetic course. During its four semesters, the course will also acquaint students with algebra, geometry, simple trigonometry, logarithms, simple logic and use of slide rule. It win be designed to increase the student s interest in mathe matics. Bailey says he believes many apt pupils become bored with basic math as it is and al ways has been taught. It is just a rehash of what they have learned before, and con- sequently, many of them drop math as soon as possible. Students, under the new system, can swing from lower to higher math with ease. Good students could finish high school with ad vanced math, advanced algebra and some trigonometry behind them. The proposed system is based on studies made by the Oregon De partment of Education that Bailey picked up last summer while at tending Oregon State College on a National Science Foundation schol arship, and on many other studies made recently throughout the nation.' Another feature of the nw de sign is that sections for slow and fast learners in like courses will be eliminated. Thus, grading will be toughened up a little for ad vanced math students, 'and grad ing can . be based strictly on achievement. Under the section system, a stu dent who did good work in a slow section of geometry, for instance might get the same grade and the same credit as a student, in the last section, although he learned considerably less. Purpose of the new setup. Bailey says, is to provide a better pro gram for students who don't plan to specialize in math or science and to strengthen courses offered college-bound students.
