OREGON PAGE 7 A Herter Has No Time For Fishing WASHINGTON (NEA) The, new boss of the State Depart ment, Christian Archibald Herter, may not be the champion grand father in official Washington, but he should be close to it. He and Mrs. Herter boast 14 grandchil dren. ' V The Herters have four children three sons and a daughter. Christian A. Herter Jr., the eld 'est, is a Boston lawyer active in .Republican politics and sometimes ' mentioned as a future candidate ior Massachusetts governor. Chris Jr. has also followed in his father's footsteps by working in the State Department. He was on the Policy Planning Board t for a time. He also served as : counsel for the Economic Cooper- ' a Hon Administration. The second Herter son. Dr. Fred- eric, lives in Dobbs Ferry. N.Y. , He is a surgeon on the staff of -Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in : New York City. .. Daughter Adele is now Mrs. Jo- teph Seronde, and lives in Lin ; coin. Mass., near Boston. J. Youngest son Miles is in busi ness in Boston. Christian Jr.. FYed- : Sric and Adele have four children each. Miles, most recently mar ried, is father of two. The Herters have two homes. While he was Governor of Mas sachusetts, the Herters bought a house in Millis southwest of Bos ton. In Washington they live in their Georgetown home, acquired when Herter was in Congress. HERTER The Herters try to stay auietlv at home at least two evenings a week. But sometimes that's diffi cult to arrange. The social de mands that go with the job of being head of the Stale Depart ment are heavy. When one of these official state visitors comes to town, it involves three formal white tie dinners right in a row. The President gives the first In the White House. Then the Secretary of State gives one at Anderson House, or at Pan-American Union. Then the visitor gives a return dinner at his country's embassy or a hotel. Recently, when the President of El Salvador, the Prime Minister of Ireland and King Hussein of Jordan were here right in a row, followed by the North Atlantic Treaty Council of Foreign Minis ters, the pace was killing. Herter puts in a normal 12-hour working day, five or six days a week, 8:30 to 8:30. An average schedule starts with a White House conference with the President at 8:45 a.m. Back to the State De partment for the daily staff con ference. Then one conference right after another, all day long and into the evening. Deputy Undersecretary Robert Murphy. In charge of political affairs, Is in his office a great deal. Ambassadors are received by appointment. There are calls from congressmen ana appear ances before congressional com mittees. (AP) A campaigning Democratic candi date for governor was slashed on the chest from shoulder to waist when he walked into a spinning airplane propeller Wednesday night. Ross Barnett. 60-ycar-old Jack sop lawyer, was taken to a hos pital at Memphis, 40 miles to the north. He was reported in fair condition. ' Physicians said the propeller fractured numerous ribs, but ap parently there was no damage to the lungs or heart. - The accident occurred after Barnett's chartered single - engine plane landed at the Coldwater Airport. Barnett has been a vigorous candidate in a four-way race for governor. The Democratic pri mary will be held Aug. 4. for cancer radiation treatments, Herter got what will probably be his last vacation in some time. He went to South Carolina for two weeks to shoot ducks. In spite of the arthritis that has cramped his style somewhat in re cent years, Herter is still an ar dent sportsman. He's a good fish erman in both salt and fresh wa ter, but he's had no time for that this past year. He s a Boston Red Sox rooter. with second place loyalty to the Nats. He's also a good bridge player, though he has never played with the President and h 1 s White House cronies. When Herter- does get an eve ning at home, it's often spent with reports and State papers that have to be studied. When he gets to bed. he likes to read him self to sleep with a paper back Western. House Fears Commission WASHINGTON (AP) An em barrassing legislative situation is delaying House action on a senate-passed bill for a special com mission to study unemployment and its remedies. House Democratic leaders re portedly fear that establishment of such a commission now would strengthen opposition to housing. aid to depressed areas, and other hills they are pushing to create jobs. Opponents could urge a de lay until the commission had time to study the problem. The proposal lor an u-memDcr commission was sponsored by Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas. A top-ranking Democrat said the problem was entirely one ot tim ing, and added: "If I had my way. the time would be the end of the session." Republicans were taking obvious enjoyment in the embarrassment of their Democratic colleagues They were not unaware that the author of it was Johnson, a poten tial aspirant for the 1960 Demo cratic presidential nomination. I If L n...nlV"T-'-H No Change In Fish Law "There has been no change, as far as our regulations are con cerned, in angling on the Klamatn Reservation by non-members of the tribe," according to P. W. Schneid er, director of the Oregon State Game Commission. The inquiry was made of the game commission by State Sen. Harry D. Boivin after some misunderstanding had developed over fishing in William son River and Spring Creek, as well as other creeks on the Klam ath Reservation. : -' A statement concerning policy published in the angling synopsis of the game commission was ap parently misinterpreted, according to Mr. Schneider. The Klamath Reservation streams have been open to fishing by non-Indians for a number of years, and have been stocked by the State Game Commission which has set special seasons on certain streams, such as the- Williamson River, with no objection by the Indian authorities. Decker, now com manding U.S. forces in Korea, as vice chief cf staff of the Army. Lt. Gen. Carter B. Magruder was given Decker's Korean com mand. Magruder has been deputy chief of stalf for logistics for the Army in Washington. In connection with the change, Eisenhower sent to the Senate a nomination to promote Magruder to the rank ol full general. The shifts stem from the deci sion by Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor to retire as Army chief of staff. Last month, Eisenhower tapped Gen. Lyniaii L. Lcmnitzer, who had been vice chief of staff since 1957, to succeed Taylor. Decker is following in the foot steps of Lemnitzer who had the Korean command when he was called to Washington in 1957. And presumably he was Lcmnit zer's choice for vice chief. Lem nitzer has just wound up a visit to the Far East during which he spent some time with Decker.
